I recently picked up a new Audi Q8 e-tron and I'm absolutely loving the drive, but I realized I really need a trailer hitch for my bike rack and occasional light towing. I’ve been looking into options, but I’m a bit torn between getting the OEM hitch installed at the dealership or going with an aftermarket brand like Stealth Hitches to keep that clean look. I’m particularly concerned about how the installation might affect the rear sensors or if there are any specific software updates needed for the tow mode. Has anyone here gone through this process yet? I’d love to know which route you took and what the total cost ended up being.

Totally agree that coding is the most important part! I’ve seen Westfalia work wonders on German EVs cuz they basically manufacture the OEM parts anyway. Dont skip the software sync whatever you do!!

For your situation, I'd definitely be CAUTIOUS about the sensors! I mean, I was soooo nervous when I got mine done. Honestly, I went with the dealer option just to be safe with the software side. It was like $1,500 total, which is kinda pricey, but I didn't wanna mess up the tow mode or the warranty, you know? It's amazing how it integrates, but man, my wallet felt it! gl!

EV sensors are tricky, so proper integration matters. Go with Stealth Hitches for that clean look! Ngl, you’ll still gotta visit the dealer for the software coding, but honestly, it’s amazing.

just catching up on this thread and honestly, i feel ur anxiety about this. over the years i've dealt with several EV hitch installs and if there's one thing i've learned, it's that safety and sensor calibration are NOT things you want to gamble on. these cars are basically computers on wheels, so even a tiny misalignment of the rear radar can mess with your lane assist or pre-sense.

I went through a similar process with my current setup and here's the path I took from a safety-first perspective:

1. Check out the AudiWorld forums or the e-tron section on Reddit. Seriously, there's a great resource at the AudiWorld community where members have posted the exact TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) numbers for the tow mode coding. Having those numbers when you talk to a technician is a lifesaver because it ensures they're following the official safety protocols.
2. In my experience, even if you go with an aftermarket option to save the aesthetics—like what was mentioned earlier—you REALLY gotta prioritize the professional software side. I've seen DIY jobs where the car didn't recognize the trailer, and the emergency braking kicked in while reversing because it thought the bike rack was an obstacle. Super dangerous!!
3. My recommendation? If you're worried about reliability, have a local specialized Euro shop do the physical install but take it to the dealer for the final module programming. It ensures the cooling system knows it's towing and adjusts the battery thermal management properly.

It might cost a bit more, but for the peace of mind knowing your safety systems aren't compromised?? totally worth it imo. gl with the new ride! 👍
