So I finally upgraded to the 2023 Q7 and while I love the drive the trunk is driving me nuts. I've owned plenty of SUVs but the rail system in the back of this thing is throwing me for a loop.
I was thinking about just grabbing the official Audi collapsible box but the price tag is kinda ridiculous for what looks like basic nylon. My logic was to find something that locks into those floor rails so stuff doesnt slide during turns but every aftermarket bin I find just sits on top of the carpet. Im heading out to the Rockies in three weeks and really need to get the gear organized for the kids. Are there any specific brands that actually utilize the factory mounting points or should I just give up and buy a generic stay-put block system?
Like someone mentioned, those rails are a pain. Unfortunately, aftermarket support for Audi mounting points is pretty disappointing and I found they actually limit your layout. I wouldnt bother with rail-specific bins, even for the Rockies.
Late to the party but honestly, the rail system is such a huge letdown for how much these cars cost. I spent way too much time hunting for aftermarket bins that actually lock in, but most manufacturers just ignore the Audi tracks entirely. Its super frustrating when you want that clean, integrated look for a mountain trip. If you want to save your sanity before heading to the Rockies, I'd suggest these instead:
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, those rails make me nervous about things snapping off. I once had a flimsy bin slide and nearly crack the rear glass during a sharp turn... super scary. You might want to consider the Rola 59001 M.O.V.E. Rigid Base Trunk Organizer because it has a heavy rigid base that doesnt move. Just be careful to pack the heavy stuff low so it doesnt tip over tho.
Tbh I've spent way too long trying to make those Audi rails work and its mostly a letdown. Most stuff just isn't built to handle the force if you're cornering in the mountains.
In my experience, the Q7 rail system requires specific T-slot mounting pins that generic bins lack. I've tried many setups over the years and found that the Audi Genuine Telescopic Cargo Organizer 4F9061206 is the most secure for high-lateral loads.
Re: "Late to the party but honestly, the rail..." - yeah totally agree with xuxwpqkrtz, those rails are honestly more of a headache than they're worth. I'm a total beginner with car mods but I got frustrated and just tried a little DIY fix that's been working great. I ended up just sticking some heavy duty velcro on the bottom of a basic plastic bin I already had in the garage. It grips the carpet perfectly and hasn't budged once, even when I'm taking corners a bit too fast. Honestly super satisfied with it and it cost me basically nothing. If you're feeling handy, making your own setup works surprisingly well and keeps things super secure for the kids gear without the Audi tax.
