Finally getting serious about a used RS6, probably a 2021 since my budget is firm at $100k. Its gonna be a daily driver for the kids here in snowy Chicago so I need it to be solid. I read a lot about the old oil screen issues and air suspension bags blowing out but honestly most of those posts are about the C7 generation and Im confused if the C8 has the same flaws or totally new ones.

  • Budget: $100k
  • Use: Daily driver/family hauler
  • Location: Chicago
  • Timeline: Buying this month

Are there specific mechanical red flags I should check for on a test drive? I heard some stuff about the 48v battery failing too...

The C8 RS6 is an incredible machine for a Chicago winter! I absolutely love that you are planning to use it as a daily driver for the family because that is what this car was built for. Since you are looking at a 2021 model, there are several methodical checks you should perform during your inspection to make sure it is solid:

  • The 48V mild-hybrid system is the primary failure point for this generation. The Audi 48V Starter Generator BSG has a known high failure rate that Audi eventually addressed with an extended warranty. You must confirm if this component has been replaced or if the software has been updated. If the car hasnt had this done, it could leave you stranded in the middle of a snowstorm.
  • Evaluate the braking system thoroughly. Most 2021 models at your price point will have steel brakes rather than ceramics. Replacing the Audi OEM Front Brake Rotors 420mm is a massive maintenance expense, often exceeding $2,000 for a full front service. Check for any pulsing through the pedal during the test drive.
  • Tire selection is critical for Chicago. The RS6 usually comes with summer performance tires that are basically hockey pucks in freezing temperatures. I strongly suggest budgeting for a dedicated winter setup like the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 285/30R22 to ensure the car stays planted in the slush.
  • Check the rear differential for any signs of weeping fluid. It is a common spot for minor leaks that can turn into huge headaches if ignored. The C8 platform is fantastic and largely avoids the oil screen flaws of the older generation. If the electronics are healthy, you are gonna have an amazing time with this car!

Check the Dynamic Ride Control dampers for weeping if it doesnt have air bags. Id suggest using a Ross-Tech VCDS HEX-V2 Interface to scan the car for hidden faults before buying. AudiZine has some decent technical threads on C8 electronics too. It works well as a winter car if you keep up with the maintenance schedules.

TL;DR: Focus on the warranty status and 40k service. My C8 has been a total dream as a daily driver, so you will be super satisfied. Are you looking specifically for a CPO car to handle those potential 48v battery issues? Also, has the 40k service been handled yet? That is a massive expense to factor in if the car is near that mileage and you want to stay under budget.
