I'm looking to add some extra storage to my BMW X5 for upcoming ski trips and summer camping. I'm torn between the OEM base bars and aftermarket options like Thule or Yakima. Does anyone have experience with wind noise or fitment issues on the G05 rails? What's the most aerodynamic setup that won't break the bank?

Sooo I was in the exact same boat last winter! Honestly, I’m kinda cautious about spending $600+ on racks, but I was also scared of the noise. I ended up getting the BMW G05 X5 Roof Rack Base Support System because it’s way cheaper than Thule. It’s basically $250-300 if you shop around. Be careful with the install tho... I’d suggest having a buddy help so you dont scratch your roof like I almost did! lol
Honestly, if you're worried about safety and long-term durability, you gotta look at the Yakima JetStream Crossbars. They're basically industry standard for a reason. Unlike some cheaper setups that might vibrate or shift at highway speeds, these use a teardrop shape to cut wind noise and stay rock-solid. Make sure to pair them with the Yakima SightLine Towers for G05 BMW X5 for the most secure fitment. Definitely worth the extra peace of mind when you're hauling heavy skis! gl
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before dropping big money on Thule. Honestly, after years of hauling gear on BMWs, the Thule WingBar Edge for BMW X5 G05 is nice, but the value just isn't there anymore. I've had better luck with Turtle Air1 Roof Rack for BMW X5 G05 lately. They're basically silent, way cheaper than OEM, and have a lower profile that looks much cleaner on the G05 rails. Plus, they don't whistle at 80mph like some of the square bars do!!
Been thinking about your setup and I've gone through a few different ones on my X5s over the years. Honestly, you might want to consider the height clearance before you commit to anything too low-profile. I learned that lesson the hard way with my first set. It looked amazing and sat really flush, but the first time I tried to vent the panoramic sunroof with my ski box attached, I heard this horrible crunching sound. Not a mistake you want to make twice, trust me. Be careful with those silent claims too. My first high-end aero setup was a total nightmare until I figured out the weather stripping was slightly off. I actually had to pull over during a road trip to use electrical tape because the whistling was driving me insane. I've compared the dealership bars to the big name brands, and while the OEM ones are sturdy, they sit kinda high which ruins the look for some people. But that height is exactly what saved my sunroof later on. Make sure to check the mounting points regularly after your first few miles, especially with the G05 rails since they can be a bit slick. If you run into any issues with the install or need a hand figuring out the positioning, feel free to reach out. I've spent way too many hours in my driveway messing with these things... definitely happy to share what I've learned so you don't have to go through the same headache.
Saved for later, ty!
