I’ve been driving my E92 M3 for a few months now, and while I love the car, the stock shifter feels a bit light and 'notchy' for my liking. I’m looking to upgrade to a weighted shift knob to help smooth out the throws and give it a more mechanical, solid feel. I’ve been looking at options like the Black Forest Industries (BFI) GS2 or maybe something from ZHP, but I’m worried about height and heat—metal knobs get crazy hot in the summer! Does anyone have experience with a specific weight or brand that really transforms the BMW shifting experience? I’m aiming for something around 400g-500g. What’s the best weighted knob you’ve used that doesn't sit too high on the lever?
yo, i feel u on the stock shifter. honestly, the factory E92 knob feels like a plastic toy compared to the rest of the car. in my experience, after trying like five different setups over the years, you gotta be careful with going *too* heavy or too metallic because of the heat issue you mentioned. i mean, ive literally burned my palm on a solid steel knob after leaving the car in the sun for twenty minutes... not fun!!
for your situation, i highkey recommend the BMW ZHP Weighted 6-Speed Shift Knob. i know you mentioned it, but seriously, it's the gold standard for a reason. it weighs about 200g, which isnt quite the 400g you're looking for, but the height is lower than stock so the leverage makes it feel much more solid and mechanical. plus, it’s wrapped in leather so it wont fry your hand in July.
if you're dead set on that 400g+ feel but want to save some cash, check out the Black Forest Industries GS2 Air Billet Heavyweight Shift Knob. it hits that weight target perfectly. i suggest getting the perforated leather version—the leather acts as a thermal barrier so the metal core doesn't get as hot. basically, its the best of both worlds. i usually find these for around $115-$130 if you shop around, which is way cheaper than some of the high-end boutique brands. just make sure you tighten the set screws properly or it'll rattle, which is always my biggest worry with aftermarket stuff. gl with the build! peace
Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, I've tried a few setups on my E92 and found that while the ultra-heavy 500g knobs look cool, they totally kill the feedback of the gearbox iirc. I went through a phase where I bought a really expensive solid steel one, but it was basically impossible to touch after sitting in the sun for an hour. Ngl it was a huge waste of money. My current setup is a leather-wrapped one that's slightly shorter than stock; it cost way less and the weight is balanced enough to smooth the shifts without feeling like a sledgehammer. Plus, it doesnt burn my hand off in July haha.
yo honestly if ur worried about burning ur hand i highkey recommend the Raceseng Topology Shift Knob. it has a delrin cover so it wont get crazy hot but stays heavy af... amazing feel tbh!! gl
