I’m looking to upgrade the look of my BMW M3 and I've decided on carbon fiber mirror caps, but there are so many options out there! I’m torn between the aggressive M-Performance style with the sharp winglet and the more subtle, rounded OEM+ look. I've seen some cheap versions online, but I'm worried about the weave pattern not matching the factory roof or the clear coat yellowing over time. Does anyone have experience with specific brands like Autotecknic or IND? I'm looking for a perfect fitment without gaps. Which style do you think flows better with the M3 body lines, and are there any specific brands you’d recommend for long-term durability?
100% agree
Honestly, if you're looking for that aggressive look without the "M-Tax" price tag, I've had AMAZING luck with RW Carbon BMW M3 Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps. I've been running them for three years and the clear coat still looks brand new! Seriously, the fitment is basically 99% perfect.
I mean, IND is great but if you wanna save some cash for other mods, check out:
* Kies Motorsports G80 M3 Carbon Fiber Mirror Covers - super solid budget option.
* AutoTecknic Replacement Carbon Fiber Mirror Covers - M-Style - these match the factory 2x2 weave perfectly, right?
I personally love the winged style cuz it flows so well with the aggressive M3 lines. Just make sure to ceramic coat them before installing to prevent that yellowing you're worried about tho! gl!
I went through this last year when I was spec'ing out my G80, and honestly, it's a bit of a rabbit hole. I was pretty obsessed with the technical side of the dry carbon process because I've seen so many cheap caps delaminate after one summer. I initially tried some mid-range ones, but the weave was basically a 2x2 that didn't line up with the 1x1 on my roof... it drove me crazy every time I walked up to the car!!
I eventually swapped to the BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps and the difference in the UV-inhibited clear coat was night and day. I also looked into the AutoTecknic Dry Carbon Competition Mirror Covers because they use a pre-preg process that keeps them super thin for that flush fitment. In my experience, if you don't get the clips exactly right on the install, you're gonna have wind noise at highway speeds. Just be careful with the plastic pry tools, those OEM tabs are fragile af lol.
Building on the earlier suggestion, you really gotta look at how these things are manufactured. In my experience, cheap molds are where the fitment issues start, and once you get a gap, wind noise becomes a total nightmare. Ive tried many different setups over the years and now I'm much more conservative about what I'll actually put on my car. I'd rather spend more once than deal with a cap that starts vibrating at 80mph or yellowing after six months. Just catching up on this... quick question though. Are you more concerned about the visual weave matching the roof or the actual physical fitment? Also, what kind of climate do you live in? If its super hot where you are, the resin quality is gonna be the most important factor by far for long-term durability.
Honestly, I've had issues with the cheaper versions you see on eBay... the weave never lines up and the clear coat is basically garbage. If you want that perfect factory look, just go with any of the carbon pieces from IND. Their quality is insane and they actually match the BMW roof weave. I mean, it's more expensive, but worth it to avoid gaps!
