I’ve been daily driving my Buick Regal GS for a while now, and while I absolutely love the performance and the sleeper vibe, I feel like the exhaust note is just a bit too quiet for my liking. It has that great turbocharged 2.0L, but it’s so muffled that you barely hear the engine working. I’m looking for an upgrade that provides a deeper, more aggressive tone without being obnoxious or causing that annoying highway drone.
I’ve been looking into a few options, like a cat-back system or maybe just a resonator delete, but I’m not sure which route offers the best bang for the buck. I’m also curious if anyone has experienced any fitment issues with aftermarket brands like ZZPerformance or MagnaFlow on the newer GS models. My budget is around $800 to $1,200, and I’d prefer something that keeps the quad-tip look if possible. Has anyone here swapped their stock exhaust? If so, what setup are you running and how does it sound under cold starts versus wide-open throttle?

Yo! Honestly, I feel u on the Regal GS being way too quiet stock—it's such a sleeper but needs that growl. For your situation, I would suggest looking at the ZZPerformance Buick Regal 2.0L LTG Cat-Back Exhaust System. I've been running ZZP gear on my builds for years and their fitment on the newer GS models is actually solid, though you might have to tweak the hangers just a tiny bit to get those quad tips perfectly centered in the bumper cutouts.
If you want the best bang for your buck without that nasty highway drone, the MagnaFlow Street Series Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System 19356 is probably the way to go. It’s got a deeper, more mellow tone than the ZZP, which can get a bit raspy at wide-open throttle. Cold starts are definitely more noticeable, but it settles down nicely. Since your budget is up to $1,200, either of these fits perfectly. Ngl, skip the basic resonator delete... it sounds cheap and the drone will literally drive you crazy on long trips. gl! 👍
Seconding the recommendation above! Those options are solid, but coming from an expert perspective, I gotta stress the reliability side of things too. If you're pushing for more sound, keep an eye on backpressure and EGTs so you don't stress that turbo long-term.
Two more options that are super safe and fit the newer GS perfectly:
* Corsa Performance Sport Cat-Back Exhaust System 14857: Seriously high-end. Zero drone technology which is a lifesaver for daily driving.
* Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust System 140552: This is the sweet spot for that deep growl without being obnoxious.
Personally, I'd go with the Corsa if your budget allows. It's basically the gold standard for keeping it classy while letting the 2.0L breathe. GL with the build! 👍
I went through this last year. Honestly, I totally get the struggle of trying to find that perfect balance for the 2.0L turbo. I spent months researching because I was terrified of ending up with that cheap, raspy sound or a drone that would drive me crazy on my commute.
Basically, I learned that the resonator is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for sound suppression on the GS. Before I settled on a full system, I actually tried a custom setup because I wanted to keep those stock tips—they look so good, right?
Here’s what I've messed with on mine:
* ZZPerformance Buick Regal 2.0L Turbo Downpipe - This was a game changer for the turbo spool sound, but be careful because it definitely makes things louder even with the stock muffler.
* Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust System 140552 - I eventually moved to a Borla setup and it’s probably the deepest tone I’ve heard, though I had to do some custom work to keep the quad-look.
* Vibrant Performance 1141 2.5" Ultra Quiet Resonator - I ended up welding this in to kill the highway drone after I deleted the stock resonator, and it worked like a charm.
Just sharing my experience: if you go the ZZPerformance route, their fitment is usually spot on for the LTG engines, but the tone can get a bit loud if you aren't careful with your resonator choice. My cold starts are deep now, and it only really screams when I'm actually pinning it. Good luck! 👍
