Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2022 Buick Encore Essence, and I absolutely love the leather interior. It looks super sharp, but I’m already getting a bit paranoid about keeping it in pristine condition. I have a medium-sized dog that comes everywhere with me, and I’m worried about his claws scratching the leather or mud getting ground into the seams. Plus, the summer sun here is brutal, and I want to prevent any cracking or fading over time.
I’ve looked at some 'universal' covers at local shops, but the Encore has specific seat dimensions and integrated side airbags that I don't want to mess with. I also frequently use the fold-flat front passenger seat feature for hauling longer items, so I need something that won't interfere with that mechanism. I’m looking for something that offers a premium feel without looking like a saggy bag thrown over the seat.
I've heard mixed things about neoprene versus faux leather covers regarding breathability and durability. Has anyone here found a specific brand or custom-fit model that looks factory-installed and provides solid protection for the Encore’s seats? I'd love to hear what's worked best for you!
Sooo I’ve been reading the thread and honestly, I'd actually suggest a different approach than just jumping straight into full-time seat covers. Not to disagree with the others, but as someone who's super cautious about safety, I’m always worried about how those covers might mess with the side-impact airbags integrated into the seats of the 2022 Encore Essence. Even the "airbag compatible" ones make me a bit nervous tbh because if they shift just an inch, they could block the deployment in a real emergency.
I've had a different experience managing my dog and the sun without doing a permanent install. Here’s how I look at it:
1. **Hammock Style vs. Custom Covers**: Instead of a permanent cover, I use the iBuddy Dog Car Seat Cover for Back Seat when my pup is with me.
- **Pros**: It’s heavy-duty, protects the seams from mud/claws, and takes 2 minutes to remove so the leather stays "breathable" when I'm solo.
- **Cons**: It doesn't protect the front seats, but it keeps the dog hair contained way better than fitted covers.
2. **Front Seat Protection**: For the front, especially with that fold-flat passenger seat you mentioned, maybe look into Lusso Gear Car Seat Protector.
- **Pros**: It sits under the dog's paws or cargo but doesn't wrap around the sides, so the airbag path is 100% clear.
- **Cons**: It’s not as "factory look" as a full skin.
If you're dead set on full covers, Coverking Neosupreme Custom Seat Covers are usually safer than faux leather because they stretch better for the fold-flat mechanism, but seriously... I’d check with a local tech or the dealer first to make sure you aren't compromising your safety features. Just my two cents!! gl with the new ride! 👍

I mean, i totally feel u on the dog hair and claws thing... it's literally a nightmare for leather!! For your situation, I would suggest checking out Coverking Rhinohide Custom Seat Covers or Clazzio Leather Seat Covers because they actually fit like a glove and wont mess with ur airbags or that fold-flat seat. honestly, faux leather is way easier to wipe mud off than neoprene imo...
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, custom-fit is the only way to go if ur worried about the airbags and that fold-flat seat. I've tried many universal ones over the years and they basically ALWAYS look like trash after a month lol. If ur on a budget, just get any of the neoprene options from Wet Okole. In my experience, they handle dog claws like a champ and don't get super hot in the sun, tho they're a bit harder to clean than faux leather. Plus, they actually stay put and won't mess with ur Encore's functionality. gl!
Sooo I went through this last year with my Encore! I was literally obsessed with keeping the leather perfect cuz of my golden retriever's claws and the insane heat we get here. I'm still kinda new to all the technical specs of car mods, but I did a TON of digging into how the side airbags actually deploy through the seams. Basically, I learned that if the cover isn't specifically designed with breakaway stitching, it could actually be dangerous, which is terrifying!
1. I ended up getting a custom-fit set that used a special 'map' of the Encore's seats.
2. My current setup has these hidden flaps for the airbags, so they're totally functional.
3. The material I chose feels kinda like a wetsuit? It's thick enough that the claws don't even leave a mark, but it stays surprisingly cool even when the car is sitting in the sun all day.
4. Plus, the fold-flat seat still works perfectly cuz the cover doesn't wrap around the hinge mechanism.
Honestly, going custom was so worth it for the peace of mind... the fit is so tight it basically looks factory-installed! anyway, good luck with ur search!!
Solid advice 👍
