Hey everyone! I’m finally joining the EV family and have a Cadillac LYRIQ on order (the AWD version!). I'm super excited to get behind the wheel, but I’m getting a little overwhelmed trying to figure out the best home charging setup.

I know the LYRIQ is capable of some pretty impressive Level 2 speeds, especially if you have the 19.2 kW onboard charger, but I’m not sure if I should go all-out with a high-amperage hardwired unit or if a standard plug-in model will suffice. My garage currently has a 50-amp circuit, so I’m debating between just using a NEMA 14-50 outlet or upgrading the wiring to support something beefier like the official GM Ultium Powerup station.

I’m really looking for something reliable that has a solid mobile app for tracking energy costs and scheduling charges during off-peak hours. Also, since I live in a place where it gets pretty chilly, a charging cable that stays flexible in the winter is a big deal for me. I’ve looked at the ChargePoint Home Flex and the Wallbox, but I’d love to hear from actual owners.

For those of you already driving a LYRIQ, which home charging station did you choose, and would you recommend it for its ease of use and charging speed?

tbh I love my ChargePoint Home Flex EV Charger! I chose it over the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48A cuz of the flexible cable. Hardwiring for speed was LITERALLY amazing!!

I looked at the technical specs for a few units and decided that safety and thermal management were my main priorities for the LYRIQ. If youre comparing brands, the Tesla Universal Wall Connector is a very robust option even for non-Teslas because the integrated adapter is high quality. It feels a bit more solid than some of the plastic-heavy units out there.

  • Always hardwire the unit to avoid common failure points found in NEMA 14-50 outlets.
  • Check that your service panel has the actual capacity for a 60-amp dedicated circuit. Funny enough, while the electrician was here, I got distracted by a leak in my utility sink and spent two hours trying to fix a copper pipe. I ended up having to call a plumber anyway because I dont have the right soldering tools. It is always something when you start poking around the garage infrastructure... but yeah, sticking with a reputable hardwired brand is definitely the safer route for an EV this size.

sooo I saw this earlier but just getting a chance to reply! Congrats on the LYRIQ, it's a beast. Honestly, since you're worried about the cold and reliability, I'd suggest looking at what Grizzl-E offers. They're basically built like tanks for winters, so the cables stay flexible when it's freezing out. But like, here's the BIG thing—since you've got that 50-amp circuit, I'd really recommend hardwiring whatever unit you get. Using a NEMA 14-50 outlet for hours of continuous high-draw charging can sometimes lead to heat issues or even melted sockets if it's not a heavy-duty industrial grade plug. It's just SO much safer to have a pro hardwire it directly to the panel. I'd definitely stick with a brand that's known for UL-listed safety standards. Going with the GM charging equipment is also a safe bet since it's designed for the Ultium platform. Just make sure your electrician checks your load calc first!! Safety first, right? gl!
