Hey everyone, I recently picked up a 2023 Cadillac CT5-V in Black Raven, and while I absolutely love the car, the paint is a bit of a double-edged sword. As many of you know, Cadillac's premium finishes look incredible under the sun, but they seem to be notorious for showing even the slightest swirl marks or micro-scratching if you even look at them wrong. I’m really trying to keep this thing in showroom condition, but I’m getting a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of microfiber options out there.
Currently, I’ve been using some bulk-pack towels I picked up at a local big-box store, but after my last wash, I noticed some very light marring under my garage LEDs. It's heart-breaking! I've realized that I probably shouldn't be using the same towels on this soft clear coat that I use on my daily driver. I’m looking for a serious upgrade and I'm willing to spend a bit more to protect the finish.
I’m specifically looking for recommendations on a few different types: what do you guys find works best for a final buff after applying a high-end wax or sealant? Also, what GSM (grams per square meter) should I be looking for to ensure the safest water absorption during the drying process without dragging lint across the panels? I’ve heard mixed things about edgeless vs. silk-bordered towels—some say the silk can actually scratch Cadillac's softer clear coat if you aren't careful.
I’m curious to know what the pros here use on their GM premium finishes. Are there specific brands like The Rag Company or Gyeon that you swear by for dark colors, or is there a hidden gem I’m missing?
What specific microfiber towels and GSM ratings would you recommend to safely maintain a Cadillac’s premium paint without causing swirl marks?

Ok so, I feel u on the heartbreak of seeing those swirls. Honestly, I've had issues with overpaying for "pro" gear that performs exactly the same as mid-tier stuff. For a budget-friendly but safe buffing towel, I usually grab the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels Gold 6-Pack. They're usually around $15, which is a steal. They're about 380 GSM—lowkey the sweet spot for buffing without being too aggressive.
For drying, I actually prefer a waffle weave over high GSM fluff. Something like the Viking Microfiber Waffle Weave Drying Towel is like $8 at most retailers. It's way safer cuz it traps dirt in the pockets rather than dragging it across that soft clear coat. Silk borders are fine, but edgeless is definitely the safer bet if you're worried about scratches. Save your cash for the actual coatings! gl 👍
Ok so definitely stop using those big-box towels immediately!! Cadillac Black Raven is basically a nightmare for marring if the cloth is even slightly abrasive. Honestly, those cheap bulk towels are usually a polyester blend that's too rough for soft clear coats. For a final buff, you gotta go edgeless. Silk borders sound fancy but that stitching is actually a huge scratch risk on GM paint.
I've been super happy with high-GSM towels for drying—look for something around 1100-1400 GSM so it basically *drinks* the water without you needing to apply any pressure. For sealant removal, 300-500 GSM edgeless is the sweet spot imo. The Rag Company and Gyeon are legit, no complaints there. Just make sure you're using a dedicated microfiber wash too so they stay soft. GL with the CT5-V, such a sick car! 👍
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before you go buying every towel in sight. While GSM is important, the weave actually matters more for soft black paint. I've had better luck with the Gyeon Q2M SoftWipe for buffing. It’s got a lower 350 GSM, which sounds risky, but the shorter nap actually prevents the fibers from grabbing and dragging dirt as much. Also, honestly, look into the Gyeon Q2M SilkDryer Evo for drying. It’s a twist-loop design that’s safer than high-GSM plush towels because it doesn't lint or create that 'suction' feel that can mar soft clear coats like Black Raven... just my 2 cents tho!
For your situation, I totally get the stress of keeping that finish looking perfect. Black paint is basically a full-time job tbh. I had a similar scare with my old car where a towel with those silk borders actually left nasty trails because the stitching was too stiff for the soft clear coat... it was heart-breaking ngl.
If you want to play it safe, here is what I’d suggest:
- Go strictly edgeless for everything—no borders at all so there's zero chance of a rough edge hitting the paint.
- Look for a super plush 500+ GSM for your final buffing to give that extra cushion.
- For drying, a heavy 1000+ GSM towel is a lifesaver cuz it just sucks up water without you needing to apply pressure.
I usually stick with brands like Griot's Garage or Chemical Guys for my heavy-duty drying needs. Honestly, the weight matters, but the 'grab' of the fiber is what causes marring. Just make sure youre washing them with a dedicated microfiber detergent so they stay soft!! Good luck man, that car is gonna look sick once you get the routine down. 👍
