Recommended roof rack systems for the Cadillac XT6?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a Cadillac XT6, and while I absolutely love the ride quality and the interior space, we’re quickly realizing that with the third row in use, there’s not a lot of room left for gear during our family road trips. I’m in the market for a solid roof rack system, but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the options available right now.

Does anyone here have experience with the official GM/Cadillac crossbars versus the big aftermarket brands? I’m also curious if any of you have noticed a significant drop in MPG or if the whistling at highway speeds is manageable once a cargo box is actually mounted.

For those of you who have installed a system on your XT6, which setup would you recommend for carrying a large cargo box or the occasional pair of kayaks?

Respectfully, I'd consider another option. Not to rain on the Thule parade, but I've actually had some annoying whistling issues with their T-slot strips after they aged a bit... it was sooo loud on the highway. For the XT6, I think the Yakima JetStream Black 50" Crossbars paired with the Yakima SightLine Towers and Yakima RidgeClip 32 is a better bet. The aerodynamic shape is legit, and it feels way sturdier when I'm hauling two heavy kayaks.

If you want that super integrated look, the Cadillac XT6 Roof Rack Cross Rail Package from the dealer is basically flush, but fair warning: they sit LOW. I found they can sometimes interfere with the clamps on older cargo boxes when the sunroof is tilted. The Yakima setup gives you just enough clearance without looking like a bulky "after-thought." Anyway, thats just my experience. Good luck with the build!!

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before you go all-in on the big-name aftermarket stuff. I know the previous posts recommended some high-end gear, and they’re definitely quality, but honestly... I’ve seen a few setups that made me pretty nervous about the panoramic sunroof clearance when things start to flex under load.

I'm a bit more conservative when it comes to modifications, so I’ve always been more satisfied with the official crossbars you can get directly from Cadillac. Ngl, there designed specifically for those flush rails, so the fit is 100% precise. I’ve found that they maintain that "high-end" look way better than bulky universal mounts, and they're usually much easier on the wallet too.

But before you decide, I’ve got a couple of clarifying questions: How often are you actually gonna be using the rack, and are you planning on leaving it on year-round?

If you're only using it for the occasional summer trip, spending $700+ is probably overkill and wont be worth the hassle. I’ve had no complaints with the factory-style bars for hauling my kayaks and a massive cargo box. They're super solid, and I haven't noticed any crazy drop in MPG or whistling. Just make sure you consult the weight limits in your manual... safety first! Anyway, gl with whatever you pick!

Quick question - are you planning on leaving the racks on all year, or just popping them on for family trips? Also, do you already have a cargo box, or are you looking for a combo? Knowing the weight you're planning to haul helps a lot!!

So, I've been doing a ton of market research lately cuz I’m OBSESSED with finding the perfect setup for the XT6! It’s such a gorgeous car, honestly. I know people already mentioned the Thule WingBar Edge and the Yakima JetStream Black 50" Crossbars, which are both awesome. But if you want to look at another high-end brand, have you checked out the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar? From a technical perspective, it’s designed specifically for flush rails like yours and it’s basically the lowest profile you can get.

The thing with the panoramic sunroof is all about the "stack height" of the towers. I was reading some specs and the Rhino-Rack SX100 Fitted Roof Rack Kit is pretty solid, but you gotta be careful with any "universal" clamp. If the clamp reaches too far under the rail, it’ll definitely block the glass from sliding. I saw a technical breakdown where the Yakima SightLine Towers actually have a really precise fit for the Cadillac rail profile that keeps the hardware away from the glass path.

Also, about the MPG... honestly, any bar is gonna drop it by like 1-2 miles, but the Thule WingBar Evo 118 series has these "WindDiffuser" strips that are supposed to be AMAZING for noise. I helped a friend install a set recently and we were shocked how quiet they were without a box! But yeah, once you put a huge box on top, the whistling is kinda inevitable, right? Anyway, let me know what kind of gear you're hauling and I can look up the dynamic load ratings for you!! 👍

So basically it sounds like the debate is between the high-end Thule or Yakima setups for things like kayaks and the dealer bars for that integrated factory look. Everyone seems to agree that sunroof clearance and wind noise are the biggest headaches to watch out for when ur picking a kit. Honestly i'm still pretty new to this but i'm mostly worried about how the car holds up after having these on for a long time - like if it leaves permanent marks. Here are a couple quick tips from a more cautious perspective:

  • Apply some 3M Scotchgard Paint Protection Film strips to ur flush rails before the first install to prevent those tiny grit scratches from ruining the finish over the years
  • Make a habit of checking the torque on the bolts every few weeks because vibration from the road can definitely loosen things up even if they felt solid at first I'm still figuring this out myself but i'd be so upset if i damaged the roof paint or the trim. Better to spend a little extra time on the setup than deal with a scratched rail later on when you go to sell the car!

Hey! Congrats on the XT6, honestly such a smooth ride! For your situation, I HIGHLY recommend the Thule WingBar Edge. I've used them and they look factory-spec on those flush rails. I was worried about the sunroof too, but with the right Thule Fit Kit 186072, it clears perfectly. They're so quiet!! Barely any whistle even at highway speeds. Plus, they handle my Thule Motion XT XL like a champ. gl!

This^ Also wanted to add that prioritizing a secure mounting system is key. I've actually had a rack loosen up mid-trip on my SUV once—talk about a safety nightmare... basically had to retighten everything on the shoulder.

- Check dynamic load ratings (idk if you’ve seen the specs)
- Always verify the clamp torque

Its seriously worth prioritizing a secure fit for those heavy kayaks!! Safety over aesthetics every time
