I’m currently in the middle of transforming my 2022 Chevrolet Colorado into a dedicated off-road rig, and I’ve reached the point where I need to get serious about bed protection. Since I’ll be hauling recovery gear, steel recovery boards, and potentially a bed rack for a rooftop tent, I need something that can take a beating without chipping or trapping moisture. I’ve been looking at the classic spray-ins like Line-X, but I’m also curious if a heavy-duty drop-in or a modular system like BedRug might be better for cushioning expensive gear during high-vibration trail rides.

My main concern is durability against sharp metal edges and how well the liner holds up under direct sun exposure when I'm out in the desert. I’ve seen some liners start to chalk or peel after a few years of hard use, and I’d really like to avoid that. Does anyone have experience with specific brands that fit the Colorado’s bed contours perfectly? I’m also wondering if there are certain textures that are too abrasive for soft gear bags.

For those of you with a similar mid-size off-road setup, which bed liner has actually survived your trips without needing constant touch-ups?

Ok so, for your situation with the Colorado, I highkey think you should look into the WeatherTech TechLiner Tailgate and Bed Liner combo. I’ve been running a similar setup on my mid-size rig for years and it's basically indestructible! The main safety concern with off-roading is gear sliding around and damaging the truck's bed or, worse, becoming a projectile.

I love it cuz it's a heavy-duty thermoplastic elastomer that actually fits the Colorado's contours perfectly. Unlike spray-ins that can be super abrasive on your soft gear bags, this has a bit of grip but wont shred your stuff. Plus, it doesn't trap moisture against the metal like those old-school drop-ins do, which is a total lifesaver for preventing rust long-term. Honestly, for desert heat, it holds its shape sooo well and won't chalk like some cheaper coatings. It's a fantastic value proposition if you want pro-level protection without the permanent commitment of a spray-in. GL with the build!! 👍

Honestly, if you're looking to save some serious cash while building out your Colorado, you gotta look at DIY options or hybrid setups. In my experience, spending $600+ on a pro spray-in is great, but it eats a huge chunk of your mod budget. For your situation, I would suggest going with a DIY roll-on kit like Herculiner 1 Gallon Brush-On Bed Liner Kit which usually runs under $100.

I've used this on several rigs over the years, and while it takes more prep work, it holds up surprisingly well against sharp recovery gear if you do THREE coats instead of two. To address your concern about cushioning, skip the expensive BedRug and grab a heavy-duty Dee Zee Heavy Duty Bed Mat for Chevrolet Colorado for about $120. It's thick rubber, so it'll protect your soft gear bags from the abrasive liner texture and stop your steel boards from sliding around like crazy.

One technical warning tho: if you go the budget route with a DIY liner, make sure you get a Rust-Oleum Automotive UV Matte Clear Spray to top-coat it. DIY kits are notorious for chalking in the desert sun, so that extra $15 step is literally a lifesaver for long-term durability. Total cost for this setup is basically half of a pro job, leaving you more money for that rooftop tent!!

TL;DR: Save money by using Herculiner 1 Gallon Brush-On Bed Liner Kit paired with a Dee Zee Heavy Duty Bed Mat for the best balance of protection and gear cushioning. 👍

Ok so, in my experience, if you're hitting the desert, you really gotta go with LINE-X Premium Spray-On Bed Liner. It’s UV-stable so it won't chalk or turn grey like the standard stuff, plus it’s tough enough for steel recovery boards.

Quick tips:
- Stick with a professional spray-in over drop-ins to prevent moisture trap/rust.
- Throw a BedRug Classic Bed Mat on top of the spray-in for gear cushioning.

That combo literally survives anything tbh. gl!!

Quick question—are you planning to keep the bed open or will you have a bed rack or shell on most of the time? Honestly, I've been super happy with the BedRug Classic Bed Liner in my rig cuz it saves my knees and keeps gear from sliding around, but if you're hauling sharp scrap metal or oily parts daily, it might not be the vibe. Lmk what your typical loadout looks like!
