I’m looking to add some extra storage to my Dodge Journey Crossroad for upcoming family road trips. Since I have the factory side rails, I'm curious which crossbar systems offer the best fit and durability without whistling at high speeds. Does anyone have experience with Thule or Yakima on this specific model, or are there better value options that hold up well under heavy loads?

Jumping in here because I went through this last year with my own Journey. I spent forever researching because I honestly hate that whistling sound on the highway—it literally drives me crazy during long hauls. While Thule is great (as already mentioned), I ended up going a slightly different technical route to save some cash without sacrificing the weight capacity.

Basically, I've been running a setup that's been super solid:

- I settled on the Yakima JetStream Bar Aerodynamic Crossbars paired with the Yakima TimberLine Towers for Roof Rack.
- The teardrop shape of those bars is actually legit for noise reduction; I barely notice them even at 75mph.
- For the actual hauling, I use the Rhino-Rack XTray Pro Cargo Basket which handles my oversized camping bins like a champ.

I mean, I found that the rubber T-slot inserts make a huge difference in killing the wind noise. Just a heads up—make sure you torque the towers down exactly to spec because the factory rails on the Crossroad can be kinda slick, right? Peace!

Basically, you gotta look at how crossbars actually function before dropping $500. Aerodynamics are what kill the noise, but you don't always need the big brands. Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year and was honestly shocked at the price tags on Thule. Since I'm lowkey cheap, I tried the Brightlines Universal Anti-Theft Roof Rack Crossbars for about $100. They've been solid for three years of family trips! Be careful with the weight limits tho, cuz cheaper sets can flex. I always make sure to double-check the bolt torque after the first 50 miles. Saved me a ton of cash compared to the high-end stuff tbh.

Not to disagree, but I'd actually suggest a different approach because safety is lowkey everything when youre hauling kids. I've seen cheap bars literally snap under heavy loads on the highway... terrifying. Honestly, skip the budget stuff and look at the Yakima TimberLine Towers paired with Yakima JetStream Aerodynamic Crossbars. They're engineered for serious weight and wont fail you at 70mph like some knockoffs might. Better to spend the cash now than risk a disaster later tbh!!

In my experience, I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with racks on my Journey. I started with some cheapo universal bars from a big box store, but honestly, the whistling was LITERALLY unbearable over 50mph. Such a headache for a long trip, you know?

I eventually upgraded to the Thule WingBar Evo 135 with the Thule Raised Rail Evo feet. They fit the factory side rails on the Crossroad trim perfectly. Ngl, they are kinda pricey, but the silence is worth it. Plus, they handled our heavy cargo box without any flexing. If you want a slightly better value that still holds up, I think the Yakima JetStream Crossbars are also solid, though I had issues with the end caps popping off once. Basically, just stay away from the square bars if you hate noise... anyway, hope that helps ur road trip planning! gl!
