Which exterior mods should I get for a Dodge Ram 1500?

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn in Granite Crystal, and while I absolutely love the truck, it feels a little too 'stock' sitting in my driveway. I’m really looking to give it a more aggressive, custom look without going completely overboard since it’s still my daily driver.

I’ve been doing some research, but I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by the options. I’m definitely considering a 2-inch leveling kit to get rid of that factory rake and maybe swapping out the stock tires for some beefier All-Terrains. I also really want to do something about the chrome—I’ve been looking into chrome delete kits or even just swapping the badges for matte black ones to give it a meaner profile. My budget is around $1,500 to $2,000 to start, so I need to prioritize what gives the most 'bang for the buck' visually.

For those of you who have modded your Rams, what were the first few things you changed? Are there specific brands for running boards or bed covers that you’d recommend that actually hold up well? I’d love to hear what exterior mods you think are essential for making a Ram 1500 stand out from the crowd!

Sooo I remember when my Ram felt basically invisible in the parking lot lol. Since ur on a budget, I’d prioritize: 1. Grab the Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover—it's cheap but looks great.
2. Check out Nitto Ridge Grappler LT285/60R20 tires for a meaner look.
3. Honestly, just use Plasti Dip Luxury Black for the chrome delete. It actually holds up! gl!

Quick question - are you on factory air or coils? 1. Use Bilstein 5100 Series Ride Height Adjustable Shock Absorbers for better geometry.
2. Go Rhino RB20 Running Boards add a nice technical look.

> I’m definitely considering a 2-inch leveling kit to get rid of that factory rake and maybe swapping out the stock tires for some beefier All-Terrains. Yo! Congrats on the new ride. Honestly, Granite Crystal is the best color for these trucks, but I TOTALLY feel u on that factory look. When I got my Big Horn, I felt like it looked like every other truck in the grocery store parking lot... definitely not the vibe I wanted. I spent weeks obsessing over forum posts before I finally pulled the trigger on mine. For ur budget, u can realy transform the look if u prioritize right. First thing I did was the ReadyLIFT 2-inch Leveling Kit 66-1920. It gets rid of that "nose down" rake and makes it look like a real 4x4. Seriously, it is the BEST bang for your buck visually and it only costs about 230 bucks plus labor. Since it's ur daily driver, I would highkey suggest the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W 275/60R20 tires. They look aggressive but they are super quiet on the highway. I tried some cheap ones before and they were so loud I could barely hear the radio lol. For the chrome, dont spend a fortune on a full delete kit yet. I just got the Mopar Matte Black RAM Tailgate Emblem and some black vinyl overlays for the rest. Basically cost me like 150 bucks total for the badges. If u have money left over, I am obsessed with the BakFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover. It is kinda pricey but it keeps ur gear dry and secure. Lesson learned: dont cheap out on the leveling kit installation. Get an alignment right after or ur gonna chew through those expensive tires in 6 months!! It is wierd how much a small 2 inch lift changes the whole stance. Good luck with the build, u gonna love how it turns out! peace

In my experience, I actually just went through this with my own truck... I was super worried about how mods might affect the safety sensors and lane assist. Since ur dailying this, i'd really prioritize suspension geometry so you dont wear out your ball joints early. I learned that the hard way on my last ride... it basically destroyed my steering feel. I'm still learning the exact torque specs, but here's a quick comparison on the leveling side: - MotoFab Lifts 2-inch Front Leveling Kit DR-2-G: These are CNC machined aluminum. They're durable and cheap, but i've read they can cause some metal-on-metal noise if things settle.
- Daystar 2-inch Comfort Ride Leveling Kit KC09113BK: These are polyurethane. It's a decent option for a daily cuz they absorb vibration better, though they might not look quite as beefy as metal spacers. Tbh, for the tires, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 LT275/60R20 are great for wet-weather safety and look mean. Also, maybe check out the Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover for the bed? It works well and is easy to remove. Do you plan on doing the install yourself? GL!!

^ This. Also, I am going through the exact same struggle right now with my own truck. Even after years of working on these Rams, I still find myself stuck in that analysis paralysis phase where everything looks good in photos but you worry about the long term quality. It really is a tough balance between looking custom and keeping it practical for a daily driver.

  • I think I heard that some of the matte black badge kits use cheaper adhesive that fails in high heat, but I am not 100 percent sure which brands to avoid.
  • Someone told me once that certain leveling spacers can cause a weird vibration at highway speeds, though IIRC it might just be an installation issue rather than the part itself.
  • Not sure but it feels like every time I finally settle on a brand for a bed cover, I find a forum post saying it leaks like a sieve after six months. Honestly, I am just as undecided as you are at this point. It is a lot of money to drop when you are not totally certain about how these things actually hold up to real world weather.
