Best paint protection film for the Genesis G90 Black?

I just took delivery of a new Genesis G90 in Maui Black, and the paint is absolutely stunning but looks like it will be a nightmare to keep swirl-free. Since the black finish is so deep and mirror-like, I’m really worried about rock chips and those fine scratches that always seem to show up on dark cars. I’ve been researching different PPF options, but I’m torn between going with a traditional clear gloss like XPEL Ultimate Plus or maybe something like SunTek. I want something that won't dull the metallic flake in the paint or develop that dreaded 'orange peel' texture over time. Also, I'm debating whether it's worth doing a full-body wrap or just the high-impact areas like the hood, fenders, and front bumper. Has anyone here wrapped their G90 specifically in a dark color? I'd love to know which brand provided the best clarity and if you noticed any yellowing or lifting around the complex curves of the front grille. For those who have it, which specific paint protection film brand and coverage level would you recommend for the best balance of protection and aesthetics on a black G90?

sooo i literally just went through this exact same thing with my black car last year and i totally get the anxiety. black paint is like a full-time job lol. i was super nervous about the orange peel look or it looking dull too, cuz what's the point of that deep Maui Black if you hide it behind plastic, right??

I ended up going with XPEL Ultimate Plus Paint Protection Film for the full front end. honestly... i kinda wish i had just bit the bullet and done the whole car. i mean, the front looks amazing and i cant even tell it's on there, but now i find myself constantly checking the rear doors for those tiny scratches from car washes. if you can swing the price, i'd say do the full body wrap just for the peace of mind. i've heard SunTek Reaction PPF is actually really good for that mirror finish too, maybe even a bit glossier than xpel but i havent tried it myself.

just a heads up tho, i was really worried about the edges lifting around the grille area on my car since it's got all those complex shapes. my installer told me it basically depends on how much they tuck the edges. definitely find a pro who knows what they're doing with Genesis grilles cuz they're huge! i'd probably suggest asking them if they use a plotter or do custom cuts... custom usually looks cleaner imo. its a decent option to just do the high impact stuff if you're on a budget, but honestly on a G90? full wrap is probably the way to go to keep that metallic flake popping. gl with whatever you pick!!

Curious about one thing: what's your actual budget for this? Honestly, a full-body wrap on a G90 is gonna be super pricey, like maybe $5k-$8k depending on where you live. Since ur worried about the metallic flake, have u looked at 3M Scotchgard Paint Protection Film Pro Series? It's a solid, cost-effective alternative to the stuff already mentioned. But yeah, if you're trying to be practical, just doing the front impact zones is way cheaper than the whole car lol.

For your Maui Black G90, honestly, I'd skip the usual suspects and look at STEK DYNOshield Paint Protection Film. I've found it has a way better finish than others—basically zero orange peel and it actually makes the metallic flake pop.

Since you're worried about costs, just do the 'Full Front' (hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors). It usually runs about $1,800–$2,200 depending on your shop. A full wrap is like $6k+ which is overkill unless you're parking on the street daily. STEK also has a super hydrophobic topcoat, so it stays cleaner longer. GL with the new ride, black cars are a struggle but so worth it! lol

Honestly, if youre worried about safety and long-term paint integrity, check out LLumar Platinum Paint Protection Film. In my experience, it has one of the best hydrophobic top coats and thickest layers for impact resistance. It wont dull that Maui Black flake at all... actually looks like glass. NGL, I'd skip the full wrap and just do the 'Track Pack' coverage—it hits the pillars and roof line too, which is CRITICAL for preventing structural chips on those long commutes, right?

I actually disagree with the idea that you have to drop a few thousand at a boutique shop to get decent protection. If youre even slightly handy, you can find pre-cut kits online for way less than what these guys are quoting. It takes a lot of patience but it saves a ton of money. However, I have to give a huge warning because Maui Black is basically the hardest color to DIY:

  • dust is your absolute worst enemy and will show up as tiny white dots under the film
  • the G90 front bumper has some really aggressive angles that are a nightmare for beginners
  • if you use too much slip solution it wont tack down right and you will get fingers on the edges I did my own mirrors and partial hood on my last car and it looked okay from five feet away, but up close you can see where I messed up. Its definitely not for everyone and honestly might stress you out sooo much more than just paying a pro, but for the cost-effective crowd it is an option. Just maybe start with the door cups or something small before you try to tackle that massive hood? Not 100% sure if I would risk it on a brand new G90 though lol.
