So I finally pulled the trigger on the AT4X after months of waiting and honestly im kind of fed up with the factory readiness they brag about. Like dont get me wrong it drives great but for a truck this expensive the actual utility for real trails is lacking. I went to load my gear for a weekend trip and the bed storage situation is just a mess, everything slides around and there arent enough tie down points where I actually need them. Plus the rock sliders are okay but they feel a bit thin for the stuff I want to do.

My logic was that I wouldnt need to spend another dime for a year but here I am three weeks away from a trip to the San Juan mountains in Colorado and I feel totally unprepared. I have about $2500 to spend and I cant decide if I should prioritize a decent winch or maybe a bed rack system? Or maybe better lighting because the stock high beams are kinda weak when you're actually out in the brush at night. I keep looking at the AEV stuff but it is so pricey and im wondering if there are better mid-range brands that actually fit the 2024 model without a ton of drilling. Just feeling stuck on what to buy first because I dont want to waste money on mall crawler gear that breaks the first time I hit a real trail...

Honestly, I went through the same thing. Focusing on bed utility first made the biggest difference for mountain trips. Im quite satisfied with the Rough Country Low Profile Bed Rack since it handles the tie-down issue for half the cost of premium brands. Works well. You should also look at the Badland Apex 12000lb Winch with Synthetic Rope for emergency recovery. Its solid gear for real trails...

Saw this earlier but just getting around to it now. Honestly, the way brands market trail ready trucks is pretty disappointing... had similar issues where the stock utility just doesnt cut it for real mountain trips. You can definitely get that Canyon sorted for under $2500 if you stay away from the AEV markup. For the bed mess and lighting, here is what I would do:

  • BuiltRight Industries Bed Side Rack System for the 2024 Canyon. It uses factory points and is way sturdier than generic rails for keeping gear in place.
  • Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro LED Pods for ditch lights. Seriously, stock high beams are useless once the dust kicks up out there.
  • Cali Raised LED Rock Sliders with 0 Degree Bed Step are a solid mid-range choice that actually protects the body. I really regretted going cheap on my first set of lights because they leaked within a month. Stick to the solid brands that dont require a second mortgage but actually survive the rocks.

Like someone mentioned, those factory sliders are risky. I once saw a guy crush his rocker panel in the San Juans because he trusted the stock gear too much. You gotta be careful out there. Tbh, I would suggest prioritizing these for your safety:

  • Maxtrax MKII Recovery Boards Safety Orange for traction.
  • Dee Zee Heavy Duty Bed Mat 3/8 Inch Rubber to stop gear sliding.

Jumping in here because I did the Alpine Loop last summer and honestly it was absolutely epic! I still remember watching a guy in a stock rig get his rocker panel absolutely crushed because he trusted those factory sliders a bit too much... it was so stressful to watch. I am such a huge fan of over-building for safety because being stuck at 12,000 feet is just not the vibe! When I did my Colorado run, I spent my whole budget on beefing up the protection and recovery stuff first because that peace of mind is just incredible when you are staring down a steep shelf road. You really want to be over-prepared for those jagged rocks out there! Just curious tho, are you planning on hitting the really technical stuff like Black Bear or Poughkeepsie? Also, will you be solo or traveling with a group that already has some recovery kit?
