Hey everyone! We’re gearing up for a big summer road trip with the family in our GMC Acadia, and it’s becoming pretty clear that even with the cargo space we have, things are going to be a tight squeeze. Between the kids' sports gear, our luggage, and the inevitable snacks, we definitely need to move some of the bulkier items up top to keep the cabin comfortable for everyone.
I’ve been looking at a few different options, but I’m a bit torn. Our Acadia has the flush side rails, and I want to make sure I get something that fits perfectly without scratching the finish. I’m specifically worried about wind noise on the highway—nothing ruins a long drive like a constant whistling sound from the roof! I’ve seen the official GMC OEM crossbars, but I’m wondering if it’s worth investing more in a Thule or Yakima setup for better durability and weight capacity. We’re planning on mounting a heavy-duty cargo box, so stability is a huge priority for me.
For those of you who travel often in an Acadia, which roof rack systems have worked best for you? Are there specific models that are easy to install and remove when the trip is over?
Honestly, i've had a different experience and i'd actually suggest a different approach than the usual crossbars. Unfortunately, I had issues with a heavy box on my Acadia where the wind catch felt really sketchy at high speeds. Not to disagree, but I wouldnt trust the standard setups for a truly heavy-duty load. If safety is your main concern, you should look at the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black 2 Bar Roof Rack. It sits lower to the rails which basically eliminates that annoying whistle and keeps the center of gravity much safer. I mean, it's a bit of a pain to install compared to others, but the stability is literally night and day when youre hauling a big cargo carrier, right?
Hey, I totally feel u on the space struggle! We took our Acadia to the coast last year and honestly, even with the big trunk, kids' gear takes up sooo much room. I was also super worried about that annoying whistling sound on the highway, so I did a bunch of research before our trip.
Basically, here's how I see the options for the flush rails:
• **The Budget Route:** I started with the GMC Accessories Roof Rack Cross Rail Package in Black for Acadia. It's around $250-$300 and fits perfectly because it's OEM. It works well and looks sleek, but the weight limit is a bit lower than the big brands. If you're just doing a light box, it's fine, but for heavy-duty stuff... idk.
• **The High-End Choice:** I eventually upgraded to the Thule WingBar Edge Roof Rack System for GMC Acadia. Seriously, it's expensive (like $600+), but it's basically SILENT. I dont even notice it's there. The aerodynamic shape is reallyyy good for wind noise.
• **The Middle Ground:** My neighbor uses the Yakima JetStream Crossbars with SightLine Towers on his SUV and he's super satisfied with the stability for his heavy Thule Motion XT XL Cargo Carrier.
I mean, if you're worried about the finish, the Thule and Yakima systems have really nice rubber padding. For a heavy cargo box, I'd highkey suggest the Thule setup. It's a bit of a splurge but the peace of mind while driving 75mph is worth it!! Plus, they're pretty easy to take off once you're back home. gl with the trip! 👍
tbh I totally agree with the point about weight limits - its super easy to overload the roof without realizing it. I'm fairly new to the Acadia world but I've been obsessing over the technical manuals for my DIY install. Most people pay the dealer to put these on but honestly it seems like something we can do ourselves if we're *realy* careful? I’m looking at the BougeRV Anti-Theft Roof Rack Cross Bars because they seem sturdy for the price and have a decent 150lb rating. If you're going the DIY route like me, here are a few things I'm planning to do to protect the car: - Get a small TEKTON 1/4-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench to make sure you dont over-tighten and crush the flush rails - I think the spec is around 4-6 Nm?
- Add some thin rubber strips or extra padding under the clamps to prevent scratches on the finish - better safe than sorry!
- Always check the *dynamic* weight rating (when moving) vs the *static* rating (sitting still) cuz they are way different and it can be wierd. Does anyone know if the flush rails on the 2022+ models are the same as the older ones? I dont want to buy the wrong mounting kit lol.
Seconding the recommendation above. I totally feel u on the noise thing, it literally drove me crazy on our last trip! Honestly, I started with the basic OEM crossbars on my Acadia because they were cheaper, but unfortunately, they weren't as good as expected once we loaded up a heavy cargo box. They kinda felt a bit flimsy under a full load, which was super stressful on the highway. I actually ended up switching to a Yakima setup with the aerodynamic bars.
Idk the exact technical specs, but the difference in stability was huge. Plus, the T-slot channels make it way easier to swap accessories. If youre worried about ur finish, just make sure to clean the side rails really well before installing anything... any bit of grit will scratch things up. It's kinda a pain to set up the first time, but worth it for the peace of mind imo. Good luck with the trip! 👍
Quick question - how much weight are you actually looking to haul up there?? Knowing your total load helps a lot cuz the Acadia roof has its limits. Honestly, I've seen people overspend on Thule WingBar Edge setups when a solid mid-range option like the Yakima JetStream Crossbars does the job for way less cash. basically, don't pay for the brand name if ur only using it once a year!
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly, those OEM bars look nice but they really do flex way too much when youve got a big cargo box full of camping gear and snacks. I went through a bit of a journey trying to find the sweet spot between price and quality for my Acadia. I settled on a DIY setup because I didnt want to pay the dealership markup. Here is what I found after trying a couple things out:
