Just picked up a Pilot TrailSport and I’m ready to hit some forest roads! Since it already has the lift and AT tires, I’m wondering what else is essential for light overlanding. Should I prioritize extra skid plates or a dedicated recovery kit? Also, any specific roof rack recommendations for gear? What are your must-have off-road additions for the new Pilot?
In my experience, I'd actually suggest a different approach. I've tried many setups over the years and realized that for light trails, airing down is the real priority. Instead of armor, maybe grab a Viair 88P Portable Air Compressor first? It's around $90 and makes a HUGE difference in ride quality on gravel. Also, Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars are a solid, cheaper alternative for gear! gl
Seconding the recommendation above. From a safety perspective, compare Maxtrax MKII Recovery Boards (solo use) vs Bubba Power Stretch Recovery Rope (kinetic pulls). Safety-first is always better than armor tbh!!
In my experience, you should highkey grab a recovery kit first!! Honestly, safety is everything. I mean, the TrailSport has decent protection but maybe add a No-Lo Designs Transmission Skid Plate just to be safe... I'm always worried about hitting something lol. For gear, the Prinsu Honda Pilot Roof Rack is amazing!! Just check with a pro about the weight limits cuz it affects handling. Basically, dont go too crazy yet! gl!
So basically the consensus is that recovery gear and tire pressure are the real MVPs for a new TrailSport. I totally agree with the idea of skipping the expensive armor at first to focus on the basics!! I mean, i remember my first trip thinking i needed EVERYTHING, but honestly, just being able to drop my tire pressure made the ride sooo much smoother and saved me from getting stuck in soft dirt. Here is the quick breakdown of what to prioritize:
- A solid recovery kit (straps and soft shackles are a must!!)
- A portable air compressor (crucial for airing back up)
- Maybe a set of traction boards (the $70 budget ones work fine tbh) You really dont need to blow your whole budget on a crazy roof rack or custom plates right away. Just get the essentials and hit the trails... you'll figure out what else you actually need once you're out there. gl!!
