Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and I’m looking to upgrade the factory rock rails. While the stock ones look okay, I’m planning to hit some more technical trails soon and I’m worried about the lack of real body protection, especially given the Gladiator's long wheelbase and tendency to high-center on obstacles.
I’ve been looking at a few options, but I’m torn between frame-mounted sliders for maximum strength and body-mounted ones that might offer more clearance. I definitely need something that can actually take a hit from a rock without folding into the rocker panels. Also, since this is my daily driver, having a bit of a step for my family to get in and out would be a huge plus, but it shouldn't sacrifice too much ground clearance.
I’ve looked at brands like Rock Krawler, Lod, and White Knuckle, but it’s hard to decide without seeing them in action. For those of you who wheel your Rubicon hard, which sliders have held up the best against the weight of the JT? Are there any specific brands that offer the best balance of a functional step and heavy-duty protection?
Hmm, I've had a different experience with frame-mounting. While I love the strength, they often hang lower and kill your breakover angle on a long JT! I'd actually suggest a different approach—the Rock Slide Engineering Step Sliders Gen 3 for Jeep Gladiator JT. They offer amazing body protection with an automatic power step for the family. In my experience, these give you the best of both worlds without the clearance issues of heavy frame rails. Honestly, it's a game changer!
Hmm, I've had a different experience with those high-end brands. They're great, but honestly, you don't need to spend $1,500+ as a beginner. Respectfully, I'd consider another option like the Tyger Auto Star Armor Kit for 2020-2024 Jeep Gladiator JT. I've banged mine on rocks plenty, and they've held up surprisingly well for around $450. They offer a decent step for teh kids without killing your clearance. FWIW, it's a solid budget-friendly way to get protection now!
In my experience, you should definitely go with frame-mounted sliders for that long wheelbase. I've seen too many body-mounted ones tweak rocker panels on the JT. For your specific needs, I'd suggest the White Knuckle Off Road Jeep Gladiator JT Rock Sliders in 0.188-inch wall tubing. They're incredibly beefy, frame-mounted for maximum strength, and honestly offer the best functional step for the family without hanging too low. Just make sure to get the angled version for better clearance... you're gonna need it on those technical trails!
Tbh I totally agree with the budget perspective. You dont always need to drop two grand to protect your rig, especially when starting out. But honestly, you gotta be really careful about what actually counts as a slider versus just a side step. A huge mistake I see people make is buying something that looks tough but only mounts to the pinch weld without any actual reinforcement. If you come down hard on those, they will basically just buckle and crush your rocker panels anyway, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid. Also, definitely watch out for the hardware that comes with some kits. A lot of times the bolts are cheap and rust out after one winter, and trying to drill out a snapped bolt from your frame is a total nightmare. Basically, just make sure whatever you pick is actually rated for the weight of a JT because these trucks are way heavier than they look once you gear them up... especially with that long wheelbase slamming down on rocks.
