Hey everyone! I recently picked up a new Jeep Grand Cherokee L and I’m looking to get a solid roof rack setup for our family road trips. Since the L has those specific flush rails, I'm a bit curious about which brands offer the best fitment without being too noisy at highway speeds. I’m mainly planning to haul a large cargo box and occasionally some kayaks, so durability is a big deal for me. I’ve been looking at Thule and Yakima, but I’m open to other sleek options that won't ruin the look of the Jeep. Does anyone have specific model recommendations or tips on the installation process for this vehicle?

tbh i was kinda disappointed with how expensive Thule WingBar Edge for Jeep Grand Cherokee L setups are... like almost $700?? for a family budget that's crazy. so i went with Brightlines Roof Rack Crossbars for Jeep Grand Cherokee L instead. they’re basically $160 and fit those flush rails perfectly. i mean, they might be a tiny bit noisier than Thule, but for the price? definately worth it. gl!

TL;DR: skip the $700 brands and get Brightlines Crossbars for way less.

Sooo I went through this last year and honestly the struggle is real! I've been a total gear head for years and when we got our GCL, I spent weeks obsessing over the perfect setup cuz I didn't wanna ruin that sleek profile. I finally decided to test out the Yakima JetStream Crossbars and the Thule Motion XT XXL Cargo Box for our huge family camping trip to the Rockies and omg it was literally a game changer!!

Just sharing my experience: I actually compared the Thule setup against the Yakima system before pulling the trigger. The Thule WingBar Edge is definitely the most aesthetic thing ever, but it felt a bit restrictive on bar space for my kayaks. On the flip side, the Yakima SkyLine Towers with the JetStreams gave me that extra overhang which is basically essential if ur trying to fit a box AND a kayak mount side-by-side.

TL;DR: The Yakima JetStream is super quiet at 80mph, while the Thule WingBar Edge looks the most "factory" but has less usable space for multiple toys. Good luck! 👍

I totally agree with mneofpufez that safety should be the top priority here, especially when you're hauling stuff for the whole family. I spent way too long looking at brand comparisons before I landed on the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack System 50 Inch. Tbh, I think they're the perfect middle ground. You get the strength and T-slot compatibility of the high-end brands but without that massive price tag. I've been using them on my GCL for a while now and they're surprisingly quiet on the highway. Since you mentioned kayaks, I'd also look into the Malone DownLoader Folding J-Style Kayak Carrier. They fold down when you aren't using them so you dont have to worry about clearance in garages, and they fit the Malone bars perfectly. It's a super solid setup that won't break the bank like a full Thule rig would. Installation was pretty easy too, basically just a clamp-and-tighten job on those flush rails.

Yo! Late to the party but honestly, if you're looking for high-end specs without that Thule tax, you gotta check out the Rhino-Rack Vortex ROC25 Flush Roof Rack. I've been a total gear head for years and the technical data on these is fantastic—they use a VGS strip that literally cancels wind noise by disrupting the airflow. Seriously, they're so quiet at highway speeds!

Pro tip: check out a site called etrailer... they have awesome installation videos specifically for the Jeep Grand Cherokee L flush rails. It's a great resource for seeing exactly how the mounting hardware sits. If you're hauling kayaks, I'd also look into the Malone SeaWing Saddle Style Kayak Carrier cuz they're way more budget-friendly than Yakima equivalents but still super durable. Basically, you get the sleek look of the high-end bars for like $450 instead of $700. Plus, the T-track compatibility makes swapping your cargo box a breeze. gl! 👍

I saw this thread earlier but wanted to weigh in because I have been realy nervous about this whole roof rack thing too. While some people say to just go for the cheapest option or the most expensive one, I honestly disagree that its that simple. I spent weeks looking at the market and felt like a lot of brands dont realy explain the safety side of things well enough for beginners like me. Here is what I found during my research:

  • A lot of the cheaper brands I looked at didnt have clear data on crash testing which definately made me worried for family trips.
  • I noticed some mounting systems use cheaper rubber that might degrade or stain the Jeep rails over time.
  • The weight limits listed on websites are often different from what the Jeep manual actually says you should put up there. I eventually picked a setup that felt more secure than the budget ones but wasnt as pricey as the top brands. Even though it was a struggle to install, I still feel a bit paranoid every time we hit a bump. It definitely makes the car feel different when its loaded up tho.
