Hey everyone! I recently pulled the trigger on a new Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and while I’m absolutely loving the extra row and the smooth ride, I’ve quickly realized that with all the seats up, my cargo space for family trips has basically vanished. We have a major road trip planned for later this summer—heading up to the mountains with the kids and our Golden Retriever—so getting some solid storage on the roof is now priority number one.
I’ve been scouring the internet for the 'best' options, but I’m finding it a bit overwhelming. Since the Grand Cherokee L (the WL75 platform) is still relatively new compared to the older generations, I want to make sure I’m getting something that fits perfectly without any weird modifications. I’m specifically looking for a set of crossbars that are sturdy enough to hold a massive XL cargo box and potentially a kayak carrier later on.
One of my biggest concerns is the panoramic sunroof. I’ve read a few horror stories on other forums about certain aftermarket racks sitting too low and preventing the glass from sliding back, or worse, causing a distracting amount of wind noise at highway speeds. I’m really hoping to find something aerodynamic that won't make the Jeep sound like a wind tunnel when we’re doing 75 mph. I’ve looked at the Thule WingBar Evo and the Yakima JetStream, but I’m curious if anyone has tried the Chief Products or even the Mopar factory upgrades.
I want something that looks sleek and matches the 'rugged but refined' vibe of the GCL, but functionality is definitely the most important factor here. Does anyone have a specific brand or model they’ve installed on their 3-row Jeep that they absolutely swear by? Also, was the installation straightforward, or did you have to deal with any annoying fitment issues with the flush side rails? I’d love to hear your recommendations before I drop $500-$700 on a setup!
Well, congrats on the new GCL! Honestly, I totally get the struggle—I picked mine up last year and quickly realized that "extra row" basically turned my trunk into a grocery-only zone. When we planned our first trip to the Ozarks with the dogs, a roof setup became mandatory.
First things first, a HUGE warning: be extremely careful with "low-profile" or generic racks. On the WL75 platform, the panoramic sunroof glass actually slides up and over the roofline. If your crossbars sit too low, the glass will hit the bars or, even worse, the mounting clamps of your cargo box. I've seen people crack their glass this way... definitely a nightmare scenario you want to avoid!
In my experience, I've tried many setups, and I would suggest the Thule WingBar Evo 135 paired with the Thule Fixpoint Evo foot pack. Over the years, I've found Thule’s aerodynamic shape is seriously the best for wind noise. At 75 mph, it’s just a faint hum—not a wind tunnel. It provides just enough clearance for the sunroof to vent and slide without interference.
If you want that "rugged" look you mentioned, the Chief Products WL Roof Rack is a beast, but the installation is way more involved. For something straightforward that fits the flush rails perfectly, the Yakima JetStream Crossbars with Yakima SightLine Towers are also a solid choice, though I think the Thule T-track system is slightly easier for swapping gear. Stick with the Thule WingBars and you'll be golden for that XL box! Hope this helps!
Can confirm this works
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before you commit to the big names like Thule or Yakima. I've had a different experience with the flush rails on the GCL, and honestly, the price-to-performance ratio on some of those high-end setups feels a bit off for what you're getting. While the WingBars are nice, I'm super satisfied with the Brightlines Roof Rack Crossbars for 2021-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L.
I went this route because they're specifically engineered for the WL75 flush rails, meaning no 'universal fit' headaches. They sit high enough to clear the panoramic sunroof without any issues—I've tested the tilt and slide functions personally—yet they're aerodynamic enough that I don't get that dreaded wind tunnel whistle at 75 mph. FWIW, I saved about $300 compared to the Thule setup, which I then put toward a solid cargo carrier. Installation took me maybe 20 minutes with the included tools. If you're looking for that 'rugged but refined' look without the brand-name tax, these work incredibly well! Anyway, back to your question—definitely check the weight ratings if you're planning on a massive XL box and a kayak simultaneously. Good luck!
> I’m specifically looking for a set of crossbars that are sturdy enough to hold a massive XL cargo box Tbh I went down a total rabbit hole comparing brands last month before I finally pulled the trigger. I was looking at the Yakima JetStream vs the Rhino-Rack Vortex bars. Yakima looks super slick and definitely fits that refined vibe, but I found the Rhino-Rack stuff actually felt like a better middle ground for a beginner like me who doesnt want to overspend. Honestly, as a newbie, it’s wild how much the prices jump just for a brand name. I spent way too long reading manuals to make sure I wouldnt crack my sunroof lol. It seems like the big name brands charge a premium for the peace of mind and better customer support if you have fitment issues later on. Quick tip: Double check the dynamic weight capacity of the GCL’s flush rails in your owners manual—sometimes the bars can carry 165lbs but the actual roof rails are rated for less!
