So we just traded in our old explorer for the new Jeep Wagoneer L because we really needed the extra legroom for the kids and our huge golden retriever. The thing is absolutely massive and it takes up the whole garage almost but now we're planning this big summer road trip out to the Rockies in mid-July and I realized we probably need a roof rack for all our gear because the trunk is gonna be full of dog stuff.
Im looking at the roof and honestly I have no idea what I am even looking for like it has these silver rails on the side but nothing going across? Sorry if this is a total beginner question but do I need to buy specific parts to make a rack work or is there like a whole kit? I looked online and saw brands like Thule and Yakima but there are so many options and I dont want to buy something that wont fit the Wagoneer since it is so new and long.
I have maybe 1200 or 1500 dollars to spend on the whole setup and I really dont want it to be super loud when we are driving on the highway. Does anyone have a specific system they recommend for this beast of a car that is easy to install for someone who isnt very handy? I just want to make sure it is sturdy enough for a big cargo box...
Basically, your Wagoneer L has flush side rails. You need a specific foot pack that clamps onto those rails and crossbars to bridge the gap. For your budget, I suggest the Thule WingBar Edge Crossbar System. It is designed to be aerodynamic, using an internal BoxBeam structure that makes the bars incredibly stiff for heavy cargo boxes. The reason it stays quiet is the WindDiffuser technology—its a textured rubber strip that redirects airflow to reduce drag and wind noise. Since you mentioned not being handy, this system is great because the bars are pre-cut for the vehicle width. You wont have to measure bar overhang or deal with complex assembly. Pair it with the Thule Motion XT XXL Cargo Box and you have a massive setup that handles the Rockies without sounding like a jet engine. Easy install, zero noise. TL;DR: Grab the Thule WingBar Edge system for the quietest, most technical fit on flush rails.
Like someone mentioned, those flush rails are a bit of a puzzle. I once clipped a low-hanging tree because I forgot how tall these rigs get with a box... honestly terrifying. To stay under budget:
I was honestly disappointed with how much noise my last aero rack made, it really killed the vibe. You'll need a specific landing pad and tower kit for those flush rails. I settled on Yakima because the fit is tighter.
