I just picked up a new Rubicon and I’m stoked to hit the trails! While it's super capable stock, I want to invest in some essential recovery gear and maybe some better lighting. What specific winch brands or skid plates do you guys recommend for someone starting with moderate rock crawling?
Unfortunately, big brands aren't as good as expected lately. Get Smittybilt X2O GEN2 10,000 lb Winch for $600... it's waterproof and honestly offers WAY better value for ur money than boutique winches.
So yeah, just sharing my experience here cuz I was in the exact same spot with my JL about two years ago. I remember being so worried about breaking something expensive on my first real crawl! I definitely took the conservative route because I didn't want to blow my entire savings at once, and tbh, I've seen too many guys get stranded because they went for the flashy stuff instead of the practical gear. Basically, I spent a lot of time looking for that sweet spot between "cheap junk" and "overpriced overkill." Over the years, I realized that while the expensive brands are nice, you really gotta prioritize what keeps you moving. Here is how I set mine up back then: 1. Protection: Before I even hit a rock, I installed the Rock Hard 4x4 Jeep Wrangler JL Steel Oil Pan and Transmission Skid Plate. It felt like mandatory insurance for me since I was terrified of punching a hole in the pan. 2. Winch: I actually went with the Smittybilt X2O GEN2 10,000 lb Waterproof Winch with Synthetic Rope. Some people hate on it, but iirc mine hasn't failed once in three seasons. Plus, I opted for synthetic rope because steel cables honestly scare me if they ever snap... way too risky for a beginner imo.
3. Basic Lights: I didn't need a massive light bar, so I just grabbed the KC HiLiTES 6-inch Apollo Pro Halogen System with Stone Guards. They provide plenty of light for slow-speed trails at night and they have that classic Jeep look. I guess looking back, I'm glad I didn't rush into the super high-end stuff right away. It gave me time to learn how my Rubicon actually handles on the rocks. But yeah, definitely focus on those skids first... you wont regret it when you hear that first "thud" underneath you lol. gl!
In my experience:
1. Warn winches are literally BULLETPROOF
2. Artec makes killer skids
I broke cheap stuff early on, so honestly, buy once, cry once and youll be set!!
