Hey everyone! I’m currently in the middle of turning my Sorento into a more capable overlander, but I’m struggling to find the right mud guards. The OEM ones are way too small and stiff for the trails I’m hitting. I’m looking for something heavy-duty that can handle mud and gravel spray without snapping when I’m crawling over rocks or navigating deep ruts. Does anyone have experience with flexible, universal-style flaps like Rally Armor or Rek Gen on this specific build? I need something that offers extra coverage for wider A/T tires but won't look out of place. What are the toughest, most durable mud guards you’d recommend for a Sorento that actually sees dirt?
Story time: I went through this exact same struggle about three years ago with my build. Honestly, after blowing through two sets of rigid OEM guards on some rocky trails in the PNW, I realized that stiff plastic just doesn't cut it for real off-roading... basically, they just act like a lever and rip your fender liner right out when you bottom out in a rut. So, over the years, I've tried many different setups, and I eventually landed on Rally Armor UR Series Universal Mud Flaps because the polyurethane stays super floppy even when it's freezing out. I actually had to custom-drill them to get that extra poke for my wider tires, but it's been a total lifesaver for my paint. I've also seen guys running Rek Gen Off-Road Universal Mud Flaps which are a bit thicker, and in my experience, those hold their shape better at highway speeds if you're worried about 'flap flutter.' But yeah, going flexible is lowkey the only way to go if you're hitting actual dirt tho.
Honestly, i've been through a few brands with my build and it's been a total headache. For your situation, I would suggest looking at these types based on what I've seen in the market:
* **Truck-style rubber flaps:** Super heavy-duty, but they can look a bit bulky on a Sorento.
* **Polyurethane brands:** Way more flexible than OEM but they definitely cost more upfront.
I went with some generic rubber ones from a local shop and they're fine, but unfortunately not as good as expected since they're already starting to fade. Basically, just get any thick rubber ones you can find—way better value than the fancy branded stuff tbh!! gl
I totally feel u!! I actually ripped my OEM guards off during a trail run last year because they were just too stiff... it was a disaster! Before I suggest the flexible ones I reallyyy love, are you worried about drilling into the fender liners or do you need a bolt-on setup?? Also, how much tire poke are we talking about exactly?? Seriously, safety is huge when you're throwing gravel everywhere!! gl!
sooo i'm still kinda new to the whole off-road thing, but honestly safety is like my #1 concern!! for your Sorento, i'd reallyyy suggest looking at TeraPump Universal Heavy Duty Rubber Mud Flaps or maybe the Sparco Universal Mud Flaps. basically rubber is way safer cuz it won't snap and fly off like the stiff plastic ones! plus they cover those wider tires so you dont crack a windshield with a rock lol. gl!!
Big if true
