I’ve recently picked up a 2021 Range Rover Sport, and while I absolutely love the ride, my kids and elderly parents are having a bit of a struggle getting in and out of the cabin. I’m in the market for some high-quality side steps, but I’m feeling a little overwhelmed by the options out there. I want something that looks like it belongs on the vehicle—maintaining that sleek, premium aesthetic—without compromising on durability.

I’ve been looking into both the fixed side steps and the deployable electric versions. The electric ones seem great for keeping the ground clearance intact, but I’m worried about their long-term reliability in muddy or snowy conditions. On the other hand, fixed steps are simpler, but I don't want them to look too bulky. My budget is around $800 to $1,500, and I’m definitely looking for something with a non-slip surface for safety. For those of you who have upgraded, which brands have held up the best against wear and tear? Are the OEM Land Rover steps worth the extra cost, or is there an aftermarket brand like Westin or fixed shadow steps that you’d recommend instead?

Quick question before I dive into the technical side—are you planning on doing any light off-roading, or is this strictly for the suburban school run and family trips?

1. In my experience, ground clearance is the BIGGEST factor for the Sport.
2. Over the years, I've tried many aftermarket setups, but mud buildup is actually a huge issue for electric motors.
3. NGL, the fixed ones from brands like Westin are usually way more cost-effective long-term.

Basically, if you're hitting snow, the simpler the better!! Lmk about the terrain.

Similar situation here - I was super worried about the maintenance on the electric ones, especially with road salt in the winter. I ended up going with Westin R5 M-Series Black Fixed Side Steps because the price point was way more reasonable than OEM. Honestly, the non-slip surface is a lifesaver for my kids. Quick tip: If you're on a budget, stick to high-quality fixed aluminum steps to avoid rust issues down the line. GL!

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, I've spent way too much time doing market research on these. I've had issues with a few high-end brands that just didn't hold up as expected... realy disappointing when you spend over $1k and see rust after one winter. My current setup is a simple fixed bar cuz the electric ones I tried kept freezing up. Just stay away from the cheap no-name stuff, seriously.

For your situation, honestly, I would suggest being super cautious about those electric ones! I'm pretty new to all this, but I've heard too many stories about them getting stuck in the mud or ice. Since safety is your #1 priority for your kids and parents, a fixed setup is seriously the way to go!! I actually decided on a fixed set for my own Sport recently because I was SO worried about someone slipping if the sensors failed. My current setup has this AMAZING non-slip texture that gives me total peace of mind, especially when it's raining. Plus, you don't have to worry about the motors dying after a few salty winters! I mean, I guess it's a bit of a trade-off on the sleek look, but having that solid step that's always there is basically a lifesaver for elderly parents. Maybe check out some of the more streamlined fixed options from brands like Broadfeet or Aries? They look pretty low-profile imo! Good luck!!

Sooo, I totally get where you're coming from. I was in the exact same boat with my kids and parents struggling to climb into my 2021 Sport. Honestly, I'm a bit of a cautious driver, so I highkey worried about the reliability of those electric steps too... especially when things get icy or muddy. I've heard too many stories of them getting stuck or the motors burning out if you don't baby them.

For your situation, I would suggest sticking with fixed steps for the peace of mind. I went with the Land Rover Range Rover Sport Fixed Side Steps VPLWP0190 and seriously, they are awesome. They feel incredibly sturdy and have a great non-slip surface that's safe for my older folks. Plus, they look totally OEM and sleek, not bulky at all!

* They usually run about $900 - $1,200 depending on the dealer.
* Maintenance is basically zero compared to electric ones.
* The grip is MUCH better for safety.

I mean, yeah, the deployable ones are cool, but for long-term durability, fixed is the way to go. Good luck with the upgrade!! 👍
