I'm finally looking to gear up my new Defender for some overlanding trips, but I'm torn between a full platform like the Front Runner Slimline II or a more low-profile Rhino-Rack. I need something durable for a rooftop tent and recovery gear. Does anyone have experience with wind noise or clearance issues on these? What’s the best setup you’ve used?

For your situation, I'd suggest looking beyond the usual big names and considering the Upscale Expedition Low Profile Roof Rack for Land Rover Defender 110. I've been down this road before, and while the others are great, the total cost of ownership—especially with mounting feet and wind deflectors—can really sneak up on you. Honestly, I'm a bit of a stickler for value, and I found that this setup offers a much better balance of aerodynamics and price.

Be careful with the weight of a rooftop tent; you might want to consider the Thule Caprock Platform Roof Rack Large as well. It's incredibly sturdy for recovery gear but usually retails for about $100-$200 less than the high-end platforms when you catch a sale. Just make sure to double-check your garage clearance! I actually had to swap my antenna because I forgot about that extra two inches... wait, getting sidetracked here. Bottom line: if you're budget-conscious, the Thule is a solid workhorse that won't whistle like a freight train at 70mph. 🏔️

In my experience, you should definitely check out the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack Kit. It's super sturdy for tents, but honestly, be careful with the wind noise at highway speeds!

Honestly, I had issues with the wind howl on that Front Runner. I switched to the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform 52100 and it's much quieter, though unfortunately, the mounting kit adds to the total cost.
