Which roof racks are best for the Range Rover Sport PHEV?

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Range Rover Sport PHEV, and I’m absolutely loving the quiet electric drive around town. However, my family and I are planning some longer road trips this summer, and I've realized the boot space is a bit more limited than I expected, especially once you pack the charging cables and gear. I’m looking to install some high-quality roof racks to mount a cargo box, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options.

Since the PHEV is so silent in EV mode, I’m really concerned about wind noise—I don’t want a loud whistling sound ruining the peaceful cabin experience! I’ve been looking at the official Land Rover crossbars, but they are pretty expensive. I’m wondering if aftermarket brands like Thule or Yakima offer a more aerodynamic, low-profile fit. Another specific concern is the panoramic sunroof; I need to make sure the mounting system won't interfere with the glass when it tilts or opens.

Has anyone here fitted racks to their RRS PHEV? I’d love to know if you noticed a major hit to your electric range or if there are certain models that fit the factory rails more securely than others. Which specific roof rack setup would you recommend for the best balance of aesthetics and low wind noise?

oh man, congrats on the new RRS! i feel u on the boot space struggle... i went through the exact same thing last summer when we realized the PHEV trunk is basically non-existent once you toss in the charging bags and a couple of suitcases. i was seriously worried about wind noise too because that silent EV drive is like the whole reason i bought the car! i ended up testing two different setups because i was paranoid about ruining the peaceful cabin. here is what i found: - Land Rover Range Rover Sport Roof Cross Bars VPLWR0102: These are the official dealer ones. Honestly, they’re pretty expensive—i think i was quoted nearly $500—but they’re built to clear the panoramic sunroof perfectly. The downside? They sit kinda high, which creates a bit more drag and looks a bit clunky imo.
- Thule WingBar Edge 9583B Black: This is what i actually use now. They are way more low-profile and aerodynamic. NGL, in EV mode, you can hear a faint hum if the radio is off, but it’s mostly silent. Plus, they look way sleeker. I would suggest being really careful with the sunroof tho. With my Thule Motion XT L 450L Roof Box on, the clearance is VERY tight. i actually dont even try to open the glass when the box is on cuz i’m scared it might clip. Regarding range, i noticed about a 5-8% drop in my pure electric miles on the highway, which isnt too bad but definitely something to keep in mind for longer trips. Lesson learned: if you want the quietest ride and best looks, go Thule, but if you want to use your sunroof without worrying, the OEM bars are the safer (if pricier) bet. gl! 👍

This^ Also wanted to add that the boot space is honestly a joke! I used Yakima Whispbar Rail Bars to save cash, but you gotta be *super* careful with the pano roof clearance. Tbh, any rack will tank ur EV range by 10%+, so definitely consult a pro installer to avoid cracking that glass!!

yo, saw this earlier but just now responding! congrats on the RRS... the PHEV is honestly such a vibe until you realize the trunk is basically a glovebox once the charging gear is in there lol. i've been through a few different setups over the years so i TOTALLY get the wind noise concern—since the cabin is so quiet, a whistling rack will drive you crazy. before i give advice, can you clarify if your Sport already has the factory-installed flush rails? some trims dont come with them, and that changes the mounting hardware big time. also, are you looking for a permanent low-profile look or something you can pop off easily? knowing if you wanna leave 'em on 24/7 helps because even the aero bars affect your EV range over time... lmk!

Honestly, I spent way too much time looking at drag coefficients before picking my setup because I'm a bit of a nerd about aero data. For my RRS PHEV, I’ve been extremely satisfied with the Thule WingBar Edge system paired with the Thule Edge Flush Rail 7206 foot kit. The wing shape is specifically designed to reduce lift and drag, and I can confirm it works well... I barely hear a hum even in pure EV mode at highway speeds. The panoramic sunroof clearance was my biggest worry tho. I measured it and the glass clears these specific bars by exactly 18mm when fully tilted, so no heart attacks or cracked glass to worry about. Regarding the battery, I saw a minor drop of maybe 5% in my pure electric range during my testing, which is way better than the generic square bars you see everywhere. If you want something reliable that wont whistle and ruin the quiet cabin, this setup is basically perfect. It feels incredibly solid even when I’ve got the heavy gear loaded up for a long weekend.
