I've been bitten by the overlanding bug and am looking to purchase a Lexus vehicle for my adventures. I've always appreciated Lexus for their reliability and comfort, but now I'm trying to determine which model would best serve as a platform for moderate to serious overlanding trips.
My planned excursions would include multi-day journeys through the Mojave, trips up to the Pacific Northwest forests, and possibly some Rocky Mountain exploration. I'm not looking to tackle the Rubicon, but I do want something capable of handling rough forest service roads, moderate rock crawling, and occasional water crossings.
The GX series seems like the obvious choice given its body-on-frame construction and shared DNA with the Toyota 4Runner/Land Cruiser Prado. The GX460 in particular has developed quite a following in the overlanding community. However, I'm also intrigued by the LX series for its additional space and capability, though I'm concerned about its size on narrow trails. And I shouldn't completely discount the RX if it could be modified appropriately for lighter overlanding duty.
For those with experience overlanding in Lexus vehicles:
I'm particularly interested in hearing from those who've taken Lexus vehicles on extended trips. How did they perform in terms of comfort over long distances (a key reason I'm looking at Lexus), reliability in remote areas, and capability when the going got tough?
My budget is around $35-45K for the vehicle, with another $10K set aside for initial modifications. I'm comfortable with gradual upgrades over time but want to make sure I'm starting with the right platform and prioritizing the most critical modifications first.
Some specific questions I have about each potential model:
For the GX series:
For the LX series:
For the RX (if viable):
I'd also appreciate any insights on aftermarket support. Which Lexus models have the best ecosystem of overlanding-specific modifications and accessories?
Finally, if you were in my position today, looking for a Lexus-based overlanding rig with my budget and intended use, what specific year/model would you purchase and why?
I apologize for the barrage of questions, but I want to make an informed decision before investing significant time and money into this project. Any photos of your Lexus overlanding builds would be greatly appreciated as well!
Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'm looking forward to joining the community of Lexus overlanders soon.
Honestly, for that budget, you are 100% looking at a 2014+ Lexus GX 460. Skip the RX for the Mojave - you will just destroy the unibody and the AWD system basically isn't meant for rock crawling. The GX is built on the Prado 150 platform and the aftermarket support is HUGE right now. You get the 4.6L V8 (1UR-FE) which is bulletproof and uses a timing chain so you dont have to worry about the belt service like on the GX470. The biggest technical thing to watch is the KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) - it gives you CRAZY articulation on trails but you gotta be precise when lifting it to avoid the 'KDSS lean.' I would go with a Dobinsons IMS Lift Kit and some Falken Wildpeak A/T4W tires right away. While the LX570 is tempting, the AHC (Active Height Control) is complex and expensive to repair if it fails in the woods - plus the GX is much better for tight PNW trails. Since you have $10k for mods, definitely budget for Victory 4x4 Rock Sliders because the factory 'running boards' are basically made of paper and will get CRUSHED on your first real trail.
Saw this earlier but just getting home to reply! Go for the GX460, seriously... it is the absolute sweet spot for what you want. The LX is amazing but honestly feels like driving a tank on those tight PNW trails, and the RX is just gonna get stuck the second you hit soft sand in the Mojave. Forget the RX entirely lol. For a $45k budget you can snag a 2017 or 2018 with decent miles and still have plenty left for the build. First thing, swap out those factory running boards for CBI Offroad GX460 Rock Sliders because you will bash your rockers on the first moderate trail otherwise. For suspension, skip the fancy air setups and just go with a reliable Old Man Emu 2 Inch Lift Kit for Lexus GX460. It handles the extra weight of gear so much better than stock. Throw on some BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 265/70R17 tires and you are basically unstoppable for 90% of forest roads. If you need storage, LFD Off Road GX460 Roof Rack is fantastic and super modular. The rear door swing is kinda annoying for kitchen setups but you just get a drop-down table and it is fine. Honestly, the biggest technical worry is that secondary air pump bypass, so look into that before you buy. If you are doing the Rockies, that V8 is a lifesaver at high altitudes!
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
