I’m stoked about my new GX but it definitely needs some trail protection. I’m torn between getting 33-inch tires or focusing on underbody armor first. Since it’s a new model, I’m worried about fitment issues. Does anyone have experience with specific brands already shipping parts? What are the absolute essentials for a weekend overlander?

Just sharing my experience: Ngl, I went through this fitment headache last year. Safety-wise, I found protecting the transmission was priority #1. I compared two setups: 1. BudBuilt 3/16-inch Steel Skid Plates - Pros: Literally indestructible. Cons: Heavy, might sag the front suspension.
2. RCI Offroad 1/4-inch Aluminum Skids - Pros: Lightweight. Cons: Unfortunately, they gouged badly on jagged rocks. Basically, I learned armor fitment is SO crucial for sensor clearance... gl!!

Yo, I totally get the excitement but man, being cautious with a brand new rig is definitely the move... I've seen too many people rush in and regret the fitment later. Tbh I'm super satisfied with just doing the essentials first and keeping it reliable so I don't break anything on day one. There's a great resource at the IH8MUD forums – specifically the GX 550 section – where owners are actually sharing "confirmed fitment" spreadsheets. It's highkey the best way to avoid buying stuff that won't bolt up right since everything is so new. If you’re trying to keep the budget under control, you don’t need to go full overkill immediately. Check out Victory 4x4 Lexus GX 550 Blitz Rock Sliders – they usually start around $749 and provide solid protection without the crazy custom price tag of some other brands. For tires, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W 265/70R18 are a fantastic 33-inch option that often costs significantly less than the Toyos mentioned earlier. They're like, reallyyy quiet on the highway too. Just a heads up though, even with 33s, some guys are reporting minor rubbing at full lock... maybe talk to a professional installer before you start trimming those brand new wheel liners. Better safe than sorry when you're dealing with a $70k Lexus!! Anyway, congrats on the purchase, basically my dream truck. 👍

Ok so, I've been wheeling Lexuses for years and I'd definately start with armor first. You dont wanna bang up that new underbody... honestly it's the move. 1. Westcott Designs Lexus GX 550 Rock Sliders - Crucial for door protection cuz repairs are pricey.
2. CBI Offroad Lexus GX 550 Skid Plate Set - Mandatory for oil pan safety.
3. Toyo Open Country A/T III 275/70R18 - 33s look sick but fitment is kind of a gamble!
