Are OEM roof racks better than Thule for a Lincoln MKX?

I’m looking to add some crossbars to my MKX for a cargo box, but I’m torn between the factory Lincoln rails and a Thule setup. I want something that looks sleek and won't whistle at highway speeds. Does the OEM fitment actually hold up better, or is Thule worth the extra cost for the versatility? Which one is easier to install?

Sooo, I was in the exact same boat with my MKX last summer! Honestly, I went with the Lincoln MKX OEM Roof Rack Cross Bars first cuz I wanted that flush, factory look. They definitely look the sleekest and the install is basically foolproof since the mounting points are already there... but ngl, they felt a bit flimsy when I loaded up my big cargo box.

I eventually swapped to the Thule WingBar Edge and it's been a total game changer!! Here's the lowdown from my experience:

- **Noise:** The Thule bars are crazy quiet. Like, I literally forget they're even up there at 75mph. The OEM ones had a tiny bit of whistle if the wind hit 'em right.
- **Versatility:** Thule wins here. I can swap them to different cars later with just new fit kits.
- **Fitment:** The Thule Fit Kit 186033 for the Lincoln is super solid. It feels way more heavy-duty than the factory rails.

Basically, if you just want the look, go OEM. But if you're actually gonna use a heavy Thule Motion XT L Cargo Box or something, the Thule setup is worth the extra cash imo. Good luck with the build tho!!

Sooo, I actually went through this whole dilemma about a year ago with my MKX! I’m kinda a nerd for technical specs, and I was super worried about the aerodynamics and wind noise. Honestly, I ended up going with the factory ones because they’re literally designed for the specific roofline of the Lincoln. The mounting points are basically perfect, which lowkey makes the install way less of a headache than trying to measure out a universal kit.

My current setup is super quiet—I barely notice it at 70mph, which is a huge win because whistling drives me crazy!! The aftermarket options are cool for versatility, but if ur mainly looking for that integrated, sleek look, I’d say go factory. Plus, I saved a bit of cash that I eventually put toward my cargo box anyway. Good luck with the install, it's pretty easy tbh! 👍

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, I was pretty torn too, but I ended up going with a more budget-friendly route that's worked out GREAT. While the OEM look is nice, the price tag can be a bit much.

I actually found a middle ground using the YAKIMA JetStream Black Aero Bar 50 inch paired with the YAKIMA Baseline System Towers. It looks just as sleek as the Thule setup but saved me about $100.

Here’s a few things I learned from the install:
- **Wind Noise**: If u get the aero bars, they’re basically silent. I barely noticed any whistle at 75mph.
- **Value**: The YAKIMA SkyBox 16 Carbonite Cargo Roof Box fits these perfectly and it's way cheaper than the Thule equivalent.
- **Resale**: If u ever sell the MKX, you can just buy new clips for the Yakima towers and move them to ur next car. OEM bars are usually a one-car deal.

Sooo yeah, if ur looking to save some cash without sacrificing quality, that's what I'd do. gl!

Just sharing my experience: I actually went through this last year because I'm basically paranoid about safety. I was worried about the weight limit of OEM bars with a heavy cargo box, so I compared the specs. The Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black actually felt way more solid to me.

* **OEM**: Sleek, but kinda lower weight rating.
* **Rhino-Rack**: SUPER quiet and feels like it’s bolted to the frame.

I mean, I don't wanna overthink it, but for highway speeds, the extra security of the Rhino-Rack SX100 Fitted Leg Kit made me feel much better. Honestly, no whistling at all! 👍

I've been spending a ton of time reading through different MKX owner groups lately because I’m also pretty nervous about the whole whistling thing. From what I’ve gathered from other owners, a lot of people actually swear by the BrightLines Anti-Theft Roof Rack Crossbars if you don’t want to pay the 'Lincoln tax' at the dealership. They seem to have a really low profile which helps with that sleek look everyone wants. I’m still pretty new to this, but I saw a few guys on another board mention that if you do get a bit of noise, you can sometimes fix it with a little bit of rubber stripping in the channels. I mean... I guess that’s a bit of a project, but it’s way cheaper than buying a whole new set. I was also looking into the Malone AirFlow2 Universal Cross Rail System because I heard they’re super easy to take on and off when you arent using them. Honestly, I dont want something permanently stuck up there if it affects my gas mileage. Has anyone here tried those? I'm just looking for something that wont give me a headache to install since I'm not exactly a mechanic lol.

Tbh I totally agree that the factory look is way cleaner for the MKX, but I’m really cautious about the panoramic sunroof clearance. I heard some bars can actually block the glass from opening or even crack it if the mounting hardware sticks down too far? Im a total beginner with this stuff so maybe I’m just overthinking it, but it seems like a big risk if the fitment isnt 100% perfect for the roofline. I dont want to mess up the glass just to get extra weight capacity. Does the OEM one definitely clear the sunroof when it slides back? Not 100% sure but it’s something to double check for sure tho.
