Should I get the cargo tray or a rubber mat?

I just picked up my new SUV and I’m looking to protect the trunk area before things get messy. I’m torn between getting the rigid plastic cargo tray with the high lip or just a heavy-duty rubber mat. I frequently haul groceries, but I also plan on taking my muddy hiking gear and the occasional sandy beach chair back there. I’m worried the tray might be too slippery for groceries, but the mat might not catch spills as well. Does the tray's lip get in the way when sliding heavier items in, or is it worth the extra protection? For those who have used both, which one do you think is better for daily use?

In my experience, you really gotta be careful with those super rigid plastic trays. I've tried many over the years and once had a cheap, hard plastic one that was *so* slick my groceries literally slammed into the tailgate every time I hit the brakes. Not a fun mess to clean up, right? For your situation with the hiking gear and beach sand, I'd suggest looking at the higher-end brands like WeatherTech or Husky.

I've done a bit of market research on this, and honestly, you want something made of TPE rather than old-school rubber or hard PVC. It gives you that high lip for the mud/sand but has a much better grip so your gear isn't becoming a projectile. Plus, the high lip on those brands is usually flexible enough that it won't break when you're sliding heavy stuff in. Just get any laser-measured liner from WeatherTech and you'll be set. Better to spend a little more for the safety and durability imo!

I'd actually suggest a different approach! Trays are pricey and can crack. What's ur budget for this? Also, do u *really* need a high lip, or is it just for light sand?

In my experience, you should definitely go for the rigid tray!! Honestly, I was so nervous about the same things when I got my SUV, but the protection is just *amazing* for messy stuff. I use the WeatherTech Cargo Liner High Lip Version and it's literally a lifesaver for muddy gear.

I mean, yeah, the lip can be a tiny bit annoying if youre sliding a super heavy crate in, but for sandy beach chairs? It keeps all that junk from falling into the carpet cracks! For the slippery grocery thing, I basically just use a cheap cargo net or a foldable organizer like the Starling's Car Trunk Organizer Adjustable 3 Compartments to keep my bags from flying around. It works sooo well! Seriously, the extra peace of mind for spills is worth it. Idk what I'd do without mine now lol. Hope that helps! 👍

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before committing to a tray. From a safety perspective, the coefficient of friction on those rigid plastic trays is super low, meaning your gear becomes a projectile during emergency braking. Not good! Plus, that high lip can be a serious trip hazard or catch your bumper when loading heavy stuff. Just curious, what kind of SUV are we talking about? And do you usually haul loose items or contained gear?

Curious about one thing: do you fold ur seats down often?? I'm kinda new to this but I've been looking at the technical side of TPE vs. rubber mats. The lip on a tray might catch spills but it's sooo annoying for sliding heavy boxes in. Honestly, if you want quality, just go with WeatherTech or Husky. Just be careful with the tray's grip... groceries slide like crazy!!
