Best side steps for easier Mercedes GLS SUV entry?

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Mercedes GLS, and while I absolutely love the ride quality and the space, I’m finding the entry and exit to be a bit of a climb. My kids are struggling to hop in without grabbing onto the upholstery, and my elderly parents find it quite challenging to get settled in the back seats. I really want to make the SUV more accessible for the whole family without ruining that sleek Mercedes aesthetic.

I’ve been looking at a few options, but I’m torn between the fixed aluminum boards and the electric power-deployable ones. I’m a bit worried about the ground clearance with fixed steps, but I’ve also heard the powered ones can sometimes have motor issues in snowy or icy conditions. Does anyone have experience with specific brands like Romik or the OEM Mercedes ones? I'm looking for something that offers a wide enough stepping surface (at least 4-5 inches) and can support a decent amount of weight without flexing.

For those of you who have added side steps to your GLS, which brand or style provided the best balance of functionality and durability? Any advice on the installation process would be great too!

I went through this last year. honestly i was so worried about my parents slipping that i spent weeks obsessing over the safety specs. i ended up going with the Broadfeet Aluminum Running Boards for 2020-2024 Mercedes GLS cuz they felt the most stable for the price.

TL;DR: Fixed boards are safer for seniors/kids but watch the install.

Basically, i skipped the electric ones cuz i live where it snows and i heard the salt literally eats the motors. i mean, imagine your 80-year-old dad trying to step out and the board jams halfway?? scary stuff tbh. I chose the broadfeet ones because they have a 5-inch width and didnt flex at all when i tested them (im 210 lbs). i would suggest being careful with the diy install tho. the brackets can be a pain and if they aren't torqued right, they might rattle. i actually took mine to a local shop just to be sure they were rock solid. worth the extra $100 for peace of mind imo!

Quick question - what’s your max budget? I’ve seen reliable Tyger Auto TG-RS2M40128 Riser Running Boards for around $350 that are super safe, but i wanna check your price range first!

yo jumping in here cuz i totally get the struggle!! honestly for a GLS budget is key since merc parts are usually insane prices. if u wanna save a ton of cash while keeping that look, checkout the TAC Side Steps Running Boards for Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. they're usually around $200-$300 which is literally a fraction of the OEM cost!!

i've been tinkering with SUVs for 15+ years and i'm telling u... fixed boards are the way to go for families. powered ones are amazing until the motor fails in the slush and then ur stuck with a $1k repair bill lol. also look at iBoard Running Boards 5 inches Matte Black if u want a super wide surface for your parents to step on. they're basically solid aluminum and wont flex at all even with heavy loads. so yeah, save your money for maintenance and go with a solid fixed set!! 👍

Saw this earlier but just now responding! Honestly, I looked at both and the powered ones are slick but I was sooo worried about motor failure in ice... kinda scary right?? Fixed boards are way more reliable and cheaper too! I mean, for families, the fixed style is literally the safest choice basically. They look amazing and wont let you down! gl!

Honestly, I feel u on the GLS climb... it's literally like scaling a mountain for kids and older folks. I've tried both styles and I gotta say, my experience with powered boards was pretty disappointing. I had AMP Research PowerStep Running Boards on my last SUV and they looked slick, but they basically gave up on me during a bad winter. Ice and salt just jammed the motors constantly, which was a total nightmare when you're just trying to get home. Plus, the motor issues are real and super expensive to fix out of warranty.

So for my current GLS, I went with the Mercedes-Benz OEM Aluminum Running Boards and honestly, it was the best move.

* **Durability:** They're solid as a rock. No flexing even with my heavy-set buddies stepping on 'em.
* **Aesthetic:** They actually integrate into the trim so it doesn't look like an afterthought.
* **Safety:** The rubber studs provide way better grip for the kids when it's raining compared to those smooth aftermarket ones.

I mean, you lose maybe an inch of ground clearance, but unless you're actually rock crawling (unlikely in a GLS lol), it's totally fine. If you want something wider, check out the Romik RAL-B Series Black Running Boards because they give you a massive 5.5-inch stepping surface which is huge for my parents. Installation is kinda a pain if you don't have a lift, so honestly, just pay a shop for 2 hours of labor. Good luck with the family! 👍
