Hey everyone! I’m looking to upgrade my Mitsubishi Montero for some serious towing. I’ve recently picked up a 22-foot boat, and I’m a bit worried the stock setup won’t cut it for the long hauls. I’m specifically looking for a heavy-duty Class III or IV hitch that can handle at least 5,000 lbs without compromising too much on departure angle for when I head off-road. I’ve seen a few options from brands like Curt and Draw-Tite, but I’m curious if there are specific models that fit the chassis better without needing major modifications. Does anyone have experience with a particular brand that offers the best bolt-on fit and durability for the Montero?
Hi there! For your situation, I've had great luck with the Curt 13223 Class 3 Trailer Hitch. It’s a solid bolt-on that handles up to 5,000 lbs. I honestly love how it tucks up high, so I didn't lose much departure angle off-road. I also suggest adding the Curt 17062 MV Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch for that 22-foot boat; it really settles the rear end on long hauls. Seriously, it's been a game changer for me! Good luck!
Seconded!
Seconding the recommendation above! Just be careful... pulling 5,000 lbs with the Draw-Tite 75112 Max-Frame Receiver requires a weight-distribution setup or you’ll compromise steering and frame integrity on those long hauls.
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
