What are the best tech upgrades for a base Mitsubishi Mirage?

Hey everyone! I recently picked up a base model Mitsubishi Mirage as my daily commuter. I absolutely love the fuel economy and how easy it is to park, but let’s be honest—the interior tech feels a little like a time capsule from 2010. Since it's the base trim, I’m missing out on a lot of the modern conveniences that make a daily drive more enjoyable.

I’ve been looking into swapping out the stock head unit for something that supports Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as the current setup is pretty bare-bones and the Bluetooth can be a bit finicky. I’m also curious if it’s worth upgrading the factory door speakers; the audio quality gets a bit washed out by road noise when I'm on the highway. I’m working with a total budget of around $500 and would prefer upgrades that are relatively DIY-friendly so I don't have to pay a shop for labor.

Has anyone here successfully integrated a backup camera or a discrete dashcam setup into their Mirage? I’m also open to smaller tech suggestions, like better interior LED lighting or even a high-quality phone mount that actually fits our tiny dashboard layout. What tech upgrades have you guys found to be the 'best bang for your buck' to make the Mirage feel like a more modern ride?

Seconding the recommendation above! That Sony unit is solid, but if you're looking for a dashcam too, you gotta check out the VIOFO A119 V3 Dash Cam. It's super discrete behind the rearview mirror and basically a must-have for commuters. Also, if you want that modern look, swap your dome light for an AUXITO 194 LED Light Bulb. It literally takes two minutes to install and makes the interior feel way less like a 2010 time capsule, you know?

Ok so, I've been tinkering with Mirages for years and the tech bottleneck is real. For your $500 budget, the biggest win is definitely the head unit. I'm currently running the Sony XAV-AX1000 6.2" Apple CarPlay Media Receiver and it literally transformed my commute. It’s super DIY-friendly if you grab a wiring harness.

About the road noise? Upgrading to Kicker 46CSC674 CS-Series 6.75-inch Coaxial Speakers makes a huge difference, but honestly, putting some Noico 80 mil 10 sqft Car Sound Deadening Mat inside the door panels while you've got them open is the real pro tip. It stops that tinny vibration so you can actually hear your music on the highway!! For the dashcam, I've had zero issues with the VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam—it's super discrete behind the mirror. Good luck dude, it's a fun little car to mod!

Honestly, just get any Sony or Pioneer head unit because cheap no-name stuff is unsafe and usually breaks. My last one was sooo frustrating... definitely go with a big brand for reliability!!!

I'm 100% on board with the head unit being the first move! It really does change the whole vibe of the car and makes it feel twenty years newer. Just a quick thought though... if you're comparing brands, Sony is fantastic for the simple UI, but I've always found Kenwood gives you much better control over the sound settings. Since our Mirages are pretty buzzy on the highway, having those extra EQ bands to tweak makes a huge difference in clarity! Honestly, it's such a fun DIY and you're gonna love the result! TL;DR: Sony is great for simplicity, but Kenwood is the way to go for better audio tuning!
