Which phone mount fits best in a classic Porsche 944 interior?

I’ve recently started daily driving my '87 944, and while I love the cockpit, I’m struggling to find a phone mount that actually works. The vertical vents are too flimsy for standard clips, and I’m hesitant to use a suction cup on the dash because I don’t want to risk cracking the original vinyl. I’ve looked into the Rennline clock-surround mounts, but they’re a bit pricey—are they actually worth it for the fitment? I really want something that stays secure during spirited drives but doesn't block the gauges or the radio. Does anyone have a specific brand or mounting setup that fits the 944 interior perfectly without looking like a total eyesore?

TL;DR from this thread: the consensus is that while the Rennline ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount PM01.11 is the gold standard for fitment, it carries a premium price. We've seen options ranging from DIY setups using 3M VHB 5952 Mounting Tape to vent-specific clips. Honestly, if you want to avoid damaging the vinyl and keep gauges clear, the market research points to the ProClip Center Mount 852226 as the best mid-range alternative for a secure, spirited drive. Hope this helps!

I totally get that. I've spent years preserving my 944's dash, and unfortunately, I've seen too many people ruin their vinyl with sticky pads. Safety-wise, I'm always worried about cheap mounts dropping the phone under the pedals during a hard turn. Honestly, if you want a budget-friendly but secure fix, I suggest the Kenu Airframe+ Vent Mount. It's around $25 and actually grips the 944's thick vent slats much tighter than the generic ones I've tried. Just be gentle when sliding it on! It's not as fancy as the custom metal ones, but for the price, it keeps your eyes on the road and your phone out of your lap. Good luck!

Just caught this thread this morning. I played around with a few setups in my 87 before I found what worked for me without spending crazy money.

  • CD slot mount: I tried a iOttie Easy One Touch 5 CD Slot Mount. Its super stable and keeps the phone in a good spot, but it makes changing radio stations a pain in the 944. If you dont mind blocking your deck, its a cheap fix.
  • DIY console bracket: I took a small metal L-bracket and tucked it behind the passenger side trim of the center console near the shifter. Topped it with a Scosche MagicMount Magnetic Phone Mount. Its totally out of the way of the gauges, doesnt touch the dash vinyl, and works well for spirited driving. Honestly, I am very satisfied with the DIY bracket. It feels way more solid than any vent clip and didnt require drilling into the visible dash. Definitely worth a shot if you want to save some cash.

Hi there, I totally get the struggle with the 944's unique dashboard layout! Honestly, those vertical vents are useless for most clips, and protecting that original vinyl is a top priority. In my experience, the Rennline ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount - Porsche 944/924/968 is absolutely worth the investment. It bolts directly behind the clock or cubby, meaning no drilling and zero risk to your dash pad. It’s incredibly secure during spirited driving—I've taken corners pretty hard and my phone hasn't budged once.

If you want a cheaper DIY route, some guys use the ProClip Center Mount 852226 which clips onto the console frame, but it can be a bit low for navigation. Anyway, back to the Rennline—it keeps the phone at eye level without blocking the gauges, which is the biggest win. It fits the '87 interior aesthetics perfectly too. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info on the install.

I went through this last year. Honestly, I couldn't justify the $100+ for the Rennline kit either, even though it's the "gold standard." Being a bit of a cheapskate with a technical itch, I experimented with a few DIY setups to save some cash.

I ended up going with a budget-friendly "L-bracket" method that cost me maybe $15 total. It’s not as polished as the custom-milled stuff, but it holds up during autocross!

Here’s what I used to keep costs down:
* A generic Scosche MAGDMB MagicMount Magnetic Dash Mount (usually around $12-$15).
* A small piece of 1-inch aluminum flat bar from the hardware store.
* Some heavy-duty 3M VHB Mounting Tape 5952.

I bent the aluminum to hook behind the trim piece next to the clock, so the tape is actually gripping the back of the plastic frame rather than the fragile dash vinyl. It's solid, doesn't block my oil pressure gauge, and saved me about 80 bucks. Anyway, back to your question... if you're handy with a pair of pliers and some tape, you can definitely avoid the Porsche tax. Just be careful with the brittle plastic tabs when you're poking around back there!
