Hey everyone! I’m beyond excited because I just locked in my delivery date for the new Tri-Motor R1S. I’m planning to break it in with some remote dispersed camping in the Rockies, and I want to make sure I’m fully geared up to take advantage of that incredible Tri-Motor capability and the R1S's specific layout.
I’m coming from a traditional ICE SUV, so the world of 'Camp Mode' and utilizing the large glass roof is all pretty new to me. I’m specifically looking for a sleeping pad or mattress that actually fits the R1S floor dimensions perfectly when the seats are flat—I’ve seen a few generic ones, but they always seem to leave awkward gaps. Also, since I'll be utilizing the 120V outlets, does anyone have a preferred 12V or portable fridge/freezer that fits well in the rear cargo area without blocking too much visibility? I’m also curious about window shades that actually help with heat soak through that panoramic roof during the day.
I really want to maximize the utility of this beast without cluttering it up with stuff that doesn't fit the Rivian vibe. For those of you already out there exploring, what are your absolute 'must-have' accessories that make the most of the R1S's unique interior and power features?
In my experience, the Lost Horizon 4.5 inch Thick Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad ($150) is a decent option. Pair it with the Alpicool C15 Portable Refrigerator ($140)... basically works perfectly, right?
Ok so, +1 to what was said earlier! Blocking that rear window is highkey a safety risk when you're navigating tight mountain trails. I'd suggest the SetPower AJ30 32 Quart Portable Freezer because it’s usually around $230 and sits much lower than most big units, keeping your line of sight clear.
For the bed, if you wanna save cash, the Saygogo SUV Air Mattress is about $65 and fits okay, but you gotta be careful not to over-inflate it or you might stress the seams. Since you're going dispersed, you really really gotta prioritize reliability. I’d suggest grabbing a Slime 70005 Large Tire Tackle Kit for $20. These Tri-Motors are heavy beasts, and a flat in the wilderness is basically a nightmare. I guess you might also want to check your 12V power settings in the Rivian menu before you head out, just so you dont get any surprises... safety first! gl!
This^ Also wanted to add that Luno Life Air Mattress for Rivian R1S is the only way to go for the floor plan, even if it's pricey. For the fridge, save cash with the BougeRV 30 Quart 12V Portable Refrigerator. It fits low so visibility stays clear. Technical tip: use 12V to avoid inverter conversion loss. Unfortunately, the glass roof is a heat magnet, so Heatshield Custom Fit Sunshade for Rivian R1S is a total budget-saver on battery drain. gl!
Jumping in here since I've been doing the EV camping thing for a few years now. Honestly, after trying a bunch of air mattresses that always seemed to leak or feel like bouncy castles, I finally settled on the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 M. Its a bit of an investment at $350ish but the comfort is way better than the air-based stuff mentioned earlier. It fits the R1S width perfectly and feels like a real bed... tbh I sleep better in the car than at home sometimes. For the fridge, I found that the ICECO GO20 21 Quart Dual Zone Portable Refrigerator is a solid pick. It uses a Secop compressor which is super efficient on the 12V system and fits perfectly in the back without killing your rear view. Regarding the heat, I went with the EV Sportline TMaxx Triple Layer Roof Sunshade for Rivian R1S. Its way thicker than the standard mesh shades and really helps keep the AC from working overtime when the sun is beating down. You're gonna have a blast in the Rockies, just make sure you test the setup in your driveway first!
WATCH OUT for the heat soak! EVs use a lot of power for climate control, and that glass roof can KILL ur range in Camp Mode. In my experience:
- Dont use generic mattresses; they block floor vents. Stick with Luno.
- Get roof shades to keep things cool.
- Dometic fridges fit great in the back.
Basically, prioritize ur battery life over comfort... gl!
