I just got a Subaru Ascent with the factory roof rails and need a solid ski rack for our trips to the mountains. I’m looking for something that fits 4-6 pairs of skis or a few boards without being too noisy on the highway. Does anyone have a specific model that mounts easily to the Ascent’s crossbars?

Noise usually comes from poor airflow. Honestly, the Yakima FreshTrack 6 Ski & Snowboard Mount is a great budget pick:

- Costs ~$230
- Fits 6 skis

I've had mine for years; works well!

Curious about one thing: are you using the standard Subaru Ascent OEM Fixed Crossbars or did you upgrade to something more aerodynamic like a Thule or Yakima setup?

In my experience, even the best racks can howl if the crossbar spread isn't dialed in. That said, if you're looking for high-end tech and minimal drag, the Thule SnowPack L 6-Ski Mount is hard to beat. It has a vertical spring system that handles thick skis without being a brick in the wind.

Another solid move for the Ascent's height is the Yakima FatCat 6 EVO Ski and Snowboard Rack. It has a sleek, aerodynamic profile and a "HangOver" clamp that shifts the rack further out toward the edge of the roof. Makes it way easier to reach those middle skis without climbing on the door sill! Both are around $300-$350, but the build quality is top-tier.

Hi there, I totally get the struggle of finding a solid rack without breaking the bank. When I first got my Ascent, I was pretty nervous about the highway noise too. In my experience, if you're looking for a great value that doesn't scream on the freeway, the Rhino-Rack 576 Ski and Snowboard Carrier is a fantastic alternative. It usually retails around $180-$200, which is a bit cheaper than the big names but feels just as sturdy. Honestly, it fits 6 pairs of skis easily and the mounting hardware is super simple to figure out, even if you aren't a pro at DIY stuff. I mean, I'm still relatively new to the whole roof rack game, but it works really well for my family. Just a tip—make sure you center it properly to keep the wind noise down! It's a decent option if you're trying to save some cash for lift tickets. Hope this helps!

  • honestly i am in the exact same boat and it is so frustrating... i have been searching for my ascent for weeks now
  • i am super satisfied with the car itself but finding a rack that doesnt whistle is a total nightmare
  • i keep looking at the big name brands versus the cheaper ones and i still cant find a straight answer on which one is actually quiet
