Hey fellow adventurers! I recently joined the club and picked up a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness in Geyser Blue, and man, I am absolutely stoked. I’ve spent the last few weekends hitting some local fire roads and light trails, but I’m really looking to push its limits a bit more this summer. The factory 9.3 inches of ground clearance is amazing, and those Yokohama Geolandar A/T tires have been solid so far, but I can’t help but feel like I need to add a few more things to be truly "trail-ready."
I’ve been doing a ton of research, but the options are honestly a little overwhelming. My main concern right now is protection and recovery. While the Wilderness comes with some factory skid plates, I’m wondering if they’re actually beefy enough for moderate rocky sections or if I should look into full aluminum or steel plates from someone like LP Aventure or Primitive Racing. I’d hate to crack an oil pan because I got a little too confident on a technical climb!
Also, I’m torn on lighting and storage. I love the look of ditch lights, but are they more practical than a hidden light bar behind the grille for night driving on overgrown trails? I also want to keep the weight down since this is still my daily driver and I don't want to completely kill my MPG. I’ve looked at some roof racks like the Prinsu or even just a basic basket, but I’m worried about the wind noise during my morning commute.
I’ve got about $1,500 set aside for my first round of upgrades, so I really want to prioritize the "must-haves" over the gear that just looks cool for Instagram. I want functional gear that won't leave me stranded when I'm miles away from cell service.
For those of you who have been taking your Wilderness off the beaten path, what have been your absolute favorite or most essential modifications so far? Is there anything you regret buying or wish you had installed sooner?
Just sharing my experience: I wasted cash on a cheap roof basket early on and it was a disaster. The noise was torture!!
- I reallyyy regret that basket... it tanked my MPG.
- Instead, I picked up the VIAIR 88P Portable Compressor Kit for airing up—best $90 I spent.
- Also added a Diode Dynamics Stage Series 30 inch White Light Bar.
Basically, skip the noisy roof gear and focus on trail essentials that actually save your day!
Sooo, just catching up on this thread and man, I feel u on the struggle to stay under budget while avoiding the "Instagram gear" trap. I went through this same exact thing back in 2021 with my first build... honestly spent way too much on a fancy roof rack early on and then almost cracked my differential on an "easy" trail because I skipped the armor. Total rookie move!
In my experience, you really gotta weigh the weight vs. protection since this is your daily. Over the years, I've tried many setups and here is how I'd break down your options:
* **Skid Plates:** Since you're worried about MPG, aluminum is your best friend. I've been running the Rival 4x4 Aluminum Underbody Armor for a while now and it’s basically the sweet spot. It's much lighter than steel but way beefier than the thin factory "plates." I know others mentioned LP Aventure Front Skid Plate, which is great, but Rival covers a lot of ground for the price.
* **Lighting:** Tbh, I find Baja Designs Squadron Sport Ditch Lights way more useful than a hidden grille bar. Ditch lights help you actually see into the corners on tight, overgrown trails, whereas a bar just washes everything out straight ahead.
* **Recovery:** Before you spend it all on lights, grab some Maxtrax MKII Recovery Boards. They’ve saved my butt more times than I care to admit when I was miles from cell service.
If I had $1,500 right now, I’d prioritize the skids and a solid hitch-mounted recovery point like the Factor 55 HitchLink 2.0. You can always add the flashy lights later once you know where you're actually struggling. Anyway, gl with the Geyser Blue beast, seriously cool color!! 👍
yo, congrats on the Geyser Blue! Honestly, I basically learned the hard way that the factory plates aren't enough. I highkey regretted sticking with stock when I dented my oil pan on a "light" trail last month... totally not as good as I expected and it was such a bummer to fix.
For your first $1,500, I'd definitely prioritize protection. Here is how I see the main options:
* Primitive Racing Full Armor Skid Plate Set for 2024 Subaru Crosstrek vs LP Aventure Front Skid Plate for 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness
* Primitive is basically the gold standard because it's lighter and cheaper, which helps your MPG.
* LP Aventure is literally tank-status and looks incredible, but unfortunately, it's way heavier and might be overkill for daily driving.
Anyway, seriously skip the roof rack for now. I had issues with wind noise on my daily commute and it was sooo annoying... basically ruined the vibe.
My lesson? Spend on the armor first. You wont see it, but you'll feel way better when you hear a "clunk" on a rock and dont have to call a tow truck lol. Peace.
