Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2022 WRX and I'm looking to upgrade the sound and airflow. I’m torn between a few options like the Cobb, Borla, and Invidia systems. I want that classic Subaru rumble, but I’m worried about highway drone since this is my daily driver. I’ve looked into cat-back vs. axle-back options, but I'm not sure which provides the best balance of power gains and acoustics for a budget under $1,500. Has anyone here tested a few different setups on the VB or VA platforms? I’d love to hear your thoughts on which exhaust offers the best performance without being obnoxiously loud—what’s your top recommendation for a clean, deep tone?
Saved for later, ty!
Hi there! Congrats on the new VB! Honestly, since you're daily driving, you've gotta be careful with the drone. In my experience, a full cat-back is the way to go for performance, as axle-backs are mostly just for noise.
Here's how I'd break it down for your $1,500 budget:
• Invidia Gemini R400 Quad Tip Cat-Back Exhaust for 2022+ WRX: This is my top pick. It uses a resonated mid-pipe which is technical-speak for "no highway drone." It gives that deep, aggressive tone without being obnoxious.
• Cobb Tuning SS 3-Inch Cat-Back Exhaust for Subaru WRX VB: Very refined and high-quality. It's a bit quieter than the Invidia, perfect if you want to stay under the radar.
• Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust System 140904: Great flow, but can get a bit raspy at high RPMs compared to the others.
Personally, I'd go with the Invidia R400. It hits that sweet spot of performance and acoustics perfectly. 🚗💨
> I want that classic Subaru rumble, but I’m worried about highway drone since this is my daily driver. ^ This. Also, unfortunately, you're kinda chasing a ghost with the VB chassis. I've been through way too many setups over the years and the reality is that the FA24 engine just wont give you that old school heartbeat because of the factory equal length headers. A buddy of mine tried to force that sound with aftermarket UEL headers last summer and it was not as good as expected. He ended up with annoying turbo lag and eventually a cracked manifold. It’s a common mistake to prioritize sound over the actual health of the twin-scroll turbo. Most of the cheaper systems out there sound like a tin can on the highway, tbh. Dealing with drone that literally makes your interior trim rattle after a twenty-minute drive is the absolute worst... just a huge warning that if you go too cheap or skip a heavy resonator, you're gonna regret it every time you hit highway speeds. Stick to a properly engineered, resonated cat-back or you'll just be spending more later to fix the headache.
TL;DR from this thread: focus on a cat-back for the best flow-to-sound ratio while keeping your budget under $1,500. Honestly, since the Invidia and Cobb options were already mentioned, I'd check out the Remark R1 Spec Single Exit Catback Exhaust for 2022+ WRX. It’s way under budget at around $600-$700 and sounds incredibly deep. If you want a dual setup, the Revel Medallion Touring-S Exhaust for 2022+ Subaru WRX is amazing for daily driving because it's virtually drone-free. Good luck!
