I’ve been loving my new GR86, but the stock exhaust is just a bit too quiet for my taste. I’m looking for an upgrade that offers a deeper, more aggressive tone without being obnoxious or having that annoying highway drone. Since this is my daily driver, I want something that really opens up when I’m pushing it but stays civilized around town. I’ve been looking at the Borla S-Type and the HKS Hi-Power Spec L, but I’m torn on which one actually delivers the best performance gains versus sound quality. Does anyone have experience with these or other cat-back systems on the FA24 engine? Which setup provides the best balance of weight savings and power?

Honestly, I've been down the exhaust rabbit hole for years, starting back with my old 86, and I've learned that you don't always have to spend $1,500 to get that perfect tone. When I got my GR86, I wanted to stay budget-conscious while still getting some weight savings. I ended up going with the Yonaka Motorsports 2.5" Performance Catback Exhaust and I've been seriously happy with it. It’s got a deep, mellow growl that doesn't scream "look at me" when you're just cruising to work, but it definitely wakes up when you're on the throttle.

Another solid value pick is the Remark R1-Spec Single Exit Catback Exhaust. It's much lighter than stock and way more affordable than the high-end Japanese brands. Between the two, the Yonaka is a bit more "civilized" for a daily, whereas the Remark is punchier. FWIW, both are great ways to save some cash for other mods... hope this helps!

Hey! Just found this thread and honestly, I'm so excited for you—the GR86 is such an amazing platform to build on! Since you're looking for that perfect balance of daily-driver manners and technical performance, I’ve been obsessing over the specs of the HKS Hi-Power Spec L II Exhaust System for Toyota GR86.

I’m still a bit of a beginner when it comes to deep-diving into every single exhaust on the market, but from the technical data I've gathered, the HKS is a masterpiece if weight is your priority. It uses super thin-walled stainless steel to keep the weight down to about 25lbs—that's roughly 50% lighter than the stock setup! For a car that's all about agility, that’s a huge win!

Here’s why I think it fits your vibe:

1. **Weight Savings:** Like I mentioned, the Spec L II is incredibly light, which helps with the car's overall balance.
2. **Sound Profile:** It has a very refined, deep tone. It’s not raspy or "farty" at all. It uses a specific resonator design to kill that annoying highway drone you're worried about.
3. **Performance:** The straight-through design minimizes backpressure, which really lets the FA24 breathe when you're pushing toward redline.

If you want something a bit more unique, you might also look at the Fujitsubo Authorize R Cat-Back Exhaust. It’s legendary for being "civilized" during commutes but sounding absolutely fantastic when you open it up. Definitely check out some sound clips of both! Hope this helps you narrow it down! Good luck with the build!

Agreeing with the point about drone... it can really kill the vibe of a daily driver. Not a total expert on the FA24 engine yet, but I've always been more focused on the reliability and safety side of mods.

  • be careful with the clearance near the rear suspension, I think I read somewhere that some designs sit a bit tight and might rattle
  • you should definitely use new gaskets instead of reusing the old ones, IIRC the factory seals aren't always great for a second go
  • you might want to consider checking the hanger tension, as some people told me heavier setups can stress the rubber mounts
  • I'm not sure but I've heard that some of the super light systems might use thinner metal that could crack over time if you're hitting it hard Staying on the conservative side with the install is a good idea. Its always better to be safe than sorry with a brand new car. Let us know what you end up choosing tho!

Honestly, I've been through a few setups on my GR86 and learned the hard way that louder isn't always better. I initially tried a cheap unbranded delete, but the drone was unbearable for a daily.

I would suggest the Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust System 140908. It really hits that sweet spot you're looking for.

* **Warning:** Avoid the HKS Spec L if you're sensitive to higher-pitched rasp; unfortunately, I found it a bit too 'tinny' at high RPMs compared to the Borla.
* The Borla has zero highway drone.
* It’s significantly lighter than the stock boat anchor.

That said, I was actually disappointed with the power gains on most cat-backs alone; you really won't feel a huge difference without a tune, but the weight savings and sound profile of the Borla make it the winner for a daily driver IMO. Good luck!
