I recently picked up a new bZ4X and I’m absolutely loving the electric drive, but I’ve realized I really need to get a dash cam installed for some peace of mind on my daily commute. I’ve been looking at the interior layout, and with that unique dashboard design and the large sensor housing behind the rearview mirror, I’m a bit worried about where to mount one without blocking my view or interfering with the Toyota Safety Sense sensors.
I’m curious if anyone here has successfully hardwired a camera into their bZ4X yet. I’m specifically looking for a setup that looks clean—ideally something that doesn't have wires hanging down to the USB ports or 12V socket. I've seen some integrated options that replace the mirror shroud, but I'm not sure if they affect the auto-dimming mirror functionality or the rain sensors. Has anyone found a specific brand or mounting spot that works perfectly with the bZ4X’s cabin geometry? I’d love to hear about your installation process and if you ran into any issues with the EV's 12V battery system while using parking mode.
Late to the party but I went through this exact process last year! Being a bit of a technical nerd, I was super worried about the parasitic draw on the 12V battery since EVs can be finicky with that. I decided to go the DIY route to save some cash and picked up the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 Dash Cam because it has that Sony STARVIS 2 sensor which is honestly amazing for the price.
I used the VIOFO HK4 Hardwire Kit and tapped into the fuse box under the dash. The trick is setting the voltage cutoff correctly... I set mine to 12.4V because the bZ4X's 12V battery isn't huge and I didn't wanna risk a "low 12V" error message lol. It tucked right under that massive housing. It's not 100% hidden, but it's close enough and way more budget-friendly. Just make sure ur cable routing doesn't interfere with the curtain airbags!! peace.
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, I was in the same boat when I got my bZ4X last month. I'm super cautious about anything messing with the sensors, and that huge housing behind the mirror is definitely intimidating. I actually tried a generic suction mount first, but it literally fell off after two days because of the heat... so annoying lol.
I eventually went with the Fitcamx 4K Dash Cam for Toyota bZ4X (Model B) and it's basically invisible. But if you want a more traditional setup, I'd suggest these technical alternatives:
* VIOFO A229 Pro 2-Channel Dash Cam with Sony STARVIS 2 Sensors - This is great if you want high-end night vision, but you'll have to be careful routing the wires near the side airbags.
* Dongar Dashcam Power Adapter (10-pin Type B for Toyota) - This is a lifesaver! It taps into the powered mirror so you don't have to run wires to the fuse box.
Just be careful with parking mode; these EVs use a smaller 12V battery than you'd think, so make sure to set the voltage cutoff high so you don't get stranded!! gl!
yo! first off, congrats on the bZ4X!! i honestly love mine so much, the electric drive is just amazing, right?? For your situation, I would suggest going with one of those integrated brands like Fitcamx. Basically you just get any version from Fitcamx that fits the Toyota shroud and it looks totally factory, like it was meant to be there... no wires hanging down at all!!
In my experience, I was super worried about the Toyota Safety Sense sensors too. I mean, you dont want to mess with that tech!! I spent hours making sure my mount didnt clip the housing. But honestly? The integrated shroud replacements are the way to go because they’re designed to sit exactly where the OEM plastic was. Just be cautious during the install—I've seen some people snap clips if they’re too aggressive. Definitely take it slow and maybe use a plastic pry tool.
As for the battery, you gotta be reallyyy careful. Since our bZ4X uses a smaller 12V battery for the systems, a dash cam in parking mode can totally drain it if youre not careful. I actually installed a voltage cutoff kit with mine. It basically kills the power to the camera if the battery drops too low so you dont end up stranded! Seriously, don't skip that part. Plus, hardwiring it to the fuse box under the dash is way cleaner than using the USB. It’s a bit of a project but totally worth the peace of mind... good luck!! 👍
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before hardwiring. After years of testing EVs, I'm honestly SUPER cautious about tapping into the 12V system... it can be finicky!!
* **Thinkware U3000 Dual Channel**: Better safety features and a true radar mode that saves ur battery.
* **BlackVue DR970X-2CH Plus**: Great reliability, but uses more power than the Thinkware.
I mean, simple is usually better for TSS sensors... maybe skip the cheap shrouds?? just my two cents! gl!
