I just picked up my new Toyota bZ4X and I'm loving it so far, but I’ve realized I really need a reliable portable EVSE for road trips and visiting family who don't have a dedicated charger. Since the bZ4X maxes out at 6.6 kW for Level 2 charging, I’m looking for something that can handle a NEMA 14-50 outlet but is still compact enough to tuck into the trunk. I’m a bit confused by all the third-party options and want to make sure I get something UL-listed for safety. Does anyone have a specific brand they trust that works well with the bZ4X’s port placement? What’s your go-to portable charger for travel?
Sooo, first off, congrats on the new bZ4X!! I've been driving EVs for a long time now and honestly, I totally get the anxiety about finding the right gear for road trips. Since our cars only pull 6.6 kW on Level 2, you definitely don't need some massive 48A hardwired beast for the trunk. You basically just need something solid that won't overheat when you're plugged into a family member's garage outlet all night.
In my experience, the safest bet is to just go with a Grizzl-E portable unit. I've used their stuff for years and it's literally built like a tank—super rugged and weather-rated which is great if you're charging outside in the rain at a hotel. Another brand I've had zero complaints with is J+ Booster. Their gear is highkey premium and really compact, which makes it easy to tuck under the floor mat in the back.
Whatever you do, just make sure it's UL-listed like you mentioned. Ngl, there are way too many cheap, uncertified cables on Amazon that get scary hot. I've seen some sketchy stuff over the years! Just look for a 32A or 40A portable from those brands and you'll be set for that NEMA 14-50 life. It's way better than relying on the slow 120V cable Toyota gives you, lol. Gl with the new ride, they're awesome cars! 👍
Quick reply while I have a sec! Similar situation here - I went through this last year and honestly, I was sooo disappointed with the cheap units flooding Amazon that claim to be safe but lack actual UL certification. Since the bZ4X only pulls 32A, I eventually grabbed the Grizzl-E Mini 40A Portable EV Charger. It's built like a tank and the cable stays flexible even in freezing temps, which is a total must for road trips. Plus, it handles the 6.6 kW limit perfectly without breaking a sweat. Peace!
late to the party but honestly, safety is everything with these. i've tried many chargers over the years and for the bZ4X, i'd stick with something UL-listed and simple.
* Webasto Go Dual Voltage Portable EV Charger - basically the gold standard for reliability. it's pricey but worth it for peace of mind.
* Schumacher SC1455 Level 2 Portable EV Charger - more budget-friendly and super rugged for travel.
tbh dont risk it with cheap uncertified stuff cuz a melted port is *expensive*. gl!
Quick reply while I have a sec! Honestly, I’m realy cautious about some of these third-party brands on Amazon too. I ended up going a bit of a DIY route to save some serious cash while keeping the safety high. Basically, I found that you can often pick up a Ford Mobile Power Cord or the dual-voltage charger from a Chevy Bolt on eBay or Facebook Marketplace for way less than a brand new retail unit. People sell them off as "take-offs" when they trade in their cars, and since they're OEM grade, they're usually UL-listed and built to a higher standard than the cheap generic ones. Just gotta make sure it's the 32A version to match our 6.6 kW max. Also, I always carry a cheap voltmeter to test the outlets at family members' houses before I plug in—definately gives me peace of mind so I don't fry anything. You'd be suprised how many old garage outlets are wired wierd or have loose connections. Tbh, doing your own "safety check" on the outlet is just as important as the charger itself! TL;DR: Check for used OEM chargers from other brands (like Ford or GM) on second-hand sites to save money, and always test the outlet before you plug in.
> I’m a bit confused by all the third-party options and want to make sure I get something UL-listed for safety. Man, I had the exact same headache when I first got my bZ4X. Trying to find a unit that is actually UL-listed but doesnt take up half the trunk is way tougher than it looks. I spent way too many hours looking at teardown data and thermal specs for these things. I ended up being really satisfied with a slightly more technical DIY setup. I grabbed a Tesla Mobile Connector and paired it with a Lectron Tesla to J1772 Adapter 48A. It might sound weird to use a Tesla part on a Toyota, but honestly, the Tesla mobile unit is one of the most compact and thermally stable portable EVSEs on the market. It handles the 32A draw perfectly, which is exactly what our cars pull. I used it last weekend at a campsite with a NEMA 14-50 outlet and it stayed cool to the touch the whole night. Its super slim and fits right under the cargo floor in that little cubby. Just make sure you get a high-quality adapter like the Lectron one so you dont have any issues at the port... works like a charm for me so far.
Same boat, watching this
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
