I recently picked up a Toyota Highlander Hybrid and I’m struggling to find the right bike rack setup. Since it’s a hybrid, I’m a bit worried about how much a heavy rack might impact my fuel economy or if it’ll interfere with the backup sensors and the hands-free liftgate. I’m looking to carry two adult mountain bikes, preferably on a hitch-mounted platform rack for easier loading. Does anyone have experience with brands like Thule or Kuat on this specific model? I want something sturdy that won't wobble on the highway but isn't a total pain to remove when not in use. What rack are you using on your Highlander that actually fits well and doesn't block the rear camera too much?

For your Highlander, I would suggest the Thule T2 Pro XTR 2-Bike Hitch Rack. It is super sturdy for mountain bikes and has wheels to help move it around your garage when it's off the car. Just make sure to check your sensor settings!

Hi there! I totally get the anxiety about your new hybrid's efficiency. When I got my Highlander, I was super cautious about the weight too. I ended up with the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 2-Bike Rack, and honestly, it's been great! It's aluminum, so it's light enough to remove easily. But be careful with the kick sensor; it might get finicky. It doesn't tank my MPG much, though it does partially block the camera. 🚲

Honestly been thinking about this and its pretty disappointing how much people are expected to pay for racks these days. I had issues with the weight of the premium models making them a total nightmare to take off the hitch by myself. If you want to keep your mpg decent on the hybrid you really need to avoid those 60lb steel monsters. Instead of the big names you should check out the Hollywood Racks Destination 2-Bike Rack. Its significantly cheaper than the others mentioned and way lighter which helps with the handling. If that feels too entry level then the RockyMounts MonoRail 2-Bike Rack is a better value than Kuat anyway. Unfortunately your sensors and hands free liftgate are gonna be useless once you put anything on the back. It doesnt matter if you spend 200 or 1000 bucks the car is still gonna think youre about to hit something. Just save the cash and go with a more budget friendly brand.
