Which battery is best for Toyota Yaris cold starts?

Hey everyone! I’m reaching out because my 2017 Toyota Yaris has been struggling big time lately. I live in an area where the temperatures have started dipping well below freezing, and the last few mornings have been a real gamble. When I turn the key, the engine groans and cranks so slowly that I’m genuinely worried I’ll be stranded before work one of these days.

I’m still running on what I assume is the original factory battery, so it’s definitely time for an upgrade. I’ve done a bit of reading, but I’m getting overwhelmed by all the options out there. Since the Yaris has a pretty compact engine bay, I know I’m limited on physical size (I believe it's a Group 35 or 121R, but correct me if I'm wrong), and I want to make sure I get something with enough Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) to handle these brutal winters without breaking a sweat.

I’ve looked at some of the standard lead-acid options at the local auto parts store, but I’ve also heard people swear by AGM batteries like the Optima YellowTop or even the Bosch S6 for better reliability in the cold. My budget is around $150–$220, and I’m looking for something that offers a solid warranty since I plan on keeping this car for at least another three or four years. I don't have many mods, just a basic dashcam, so I don't have a massive power draw, but those cold starts are my primary concern.

For those of you living in colder climates with a Yaris, which specific brand and model of battery have you found to be the most reliable? I’d love to hear your experiences with specific CCA ratings that actually get the job done when it’s 0°F outside. What battery would you recommend for the best balance of price and cold-start performance?

I went through this last year. Honestly, I bought a budget battery once and it died in months, so be careful with those cheap store brands! I finally bit the bullet on a Bosch S6588B S6 High Performance AGM Battery and haven't looked back. Even at -5°F, it cranks instantly. Just make sure to double-check the terminal orientation; I almost bought the wrong one initially. It's pricey, but worth the peace of mind!

Hi there! I totally get that frustration. Honestly, I've been there with my own Yaris, and it's disappointing when a car that's usually so reliable starts groaning the second the temp drops.

Before you buy, it's important to understand that cold weather slows down the chemical reactions in a battery while the engine oil gets thicker, making it harder to crank. That's why those Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) are everything! In my experience, standard lead-acid batteries just didn't cut it for more than two winters.

For your situation, I would suggest going with the Optima Batteries 8020-164 35 RedTop Starting Battery. It has 720 CCA, which is way more than the factory spec and honestly more reliable than the Bosch S6508B S6 High Performance AGM Battery I tried previously. The AGM tech handles the deep freezes much better. It's a bit pricey, but for a 2017 Yaris, it fits the Group 35 slot perfectly. Good luck!

Curious about one thing: when you mention the engine groans, have you noticed if your interior lights dim significantly or if the dash display flickers during the crank? It's definitely a classic sign of a dying cell, but I want to be sure it's not a parasitic draw from that dashcam.

I've spent years tinkering with small engine bays, and while the factory Toyota Genuine TrueStart Group 35 Battery is okay, it often struggles once it hits that 4-5 year mark in freezing temps. Since you're looking for serious cold-start reliability within your budget, I'd personally steer you toward the Interstate Batteries MTX-35 AGM or the DieHard Platinum AGM Group size 35. They handle the deep discharge from cold snaps much better than standard lead-acid. Honestly, getting something with at least 600-650 CCA is the sweet spot for a Yaris in 0°F weather. Let me know about those lights, though!
