We’re planning our first long road trip in our ID.4 and definitely need more storage space. I’m concerned about how different racks might affect our range or increase wind noise on the highway. Does anyone have specific brand recommendations that work well with the panoramic glass roof? Which setup gives the best balance of capacity and efficiency?
This^ Also wanted to add that the aero penalty is highkey the most expensive part of a roof setup over time. Honestly, if ur looking for a better balance of capacity and efficiency on a budget, you might actually wanna consider hitch storage instead. Roof boxes create a massive low-pressure zone behind them that basically eats ur range. If ur set on the roof tho, I've seen great results with the Yakima JetStream Crossbars 60 inch combined with the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite. It's sooo much cheaper than the premium Thule lines but still uses an aerodynamic teardrop shape to keep wind noise down. Technically, the JetStream bars have a wind-tunnel-tested profile that reduces drag way more than standard square bars. Plus, they sit just high enough to avoid clearance issues with the panoramic roof seals. Just remember that every 10 mph over 65 is gonna drain ur battery way faster with a box up there. It works well if you keep the speed moderate. Good luck!
Curious about one thing: what's your typical highway cruising speed gonna be and how much gear are we talking about? The ID.4 is a heavy beast already, but the aero profile changes DRAMATICALLY once you stick something on the roof, especially with that pano roof reflecting all the noise. I've been running my ID.4 for over three years now and honestly, my experience with racks has been kinda hit or miss. At first, I went with the Volkswagen ID.4 Base Carrier Bars because, well, they're the official part, right? Unfortunately, they sit way too high and the wind noise was seriously unbearable above 60mph. Since you have the glass roof, the sound just resonates right through the cabin... it was reallyyy not as good as I expected for OEM quality tbh. If you really care about range, you gotta look at the technical side of the drag. Basically, every inch of height you add kills your efficiency. I eventually switched to the Thule WingBar Edge and it was a night and day difference. It sits lower and follows the lines of the car better, which helps with that annoying high-pitched whistle. For the box itself, here's what I've learned from my long-term data:
1. Low-profile is literally king. I tried the Thule Motion XT L Cargo Carrier but the range hit was a massive 20% at 75mph. 2. The Thule Vector M is way more aerodynamic if you can stomach the price, it's seriously sleek.
3. Always check hatch clearance. I actually had issues with the rear hatch hitting my Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite because it couldn't slide far enough forward on the rails. But yeah, it's a trade-off. You're gonna lose range no matter what, it's just about minimizing the damage. Let me know those details and I'll help you narrow it down! Cheers.
