Recommended bike rack for the VW ID.4 factory tow hitch?

I recently took delivery of my ID.4 and opted for the factory tow hitch, but now I’m struggling to pick the right rack. Since the ID.4 is a bit heavier than my old car and the hitch is a 1.25-inch receiver on some trims (or a 2-inch on others), I want to make sure I get something sturdy that won't wobble. I'm specifically looking for a platform-style rack for two mountain bikes that won't interfere with the rear sensors or the backup camera too much. Does anyone have experience with the Kuat or Thule options on this specific car? I’m also curious if a swing-away version is worth it for trunk access. What are you all using that fits the factory setup perfectly?

Similar situation here - I went through this last year when I spent way too much time comparing specs for my ID.4. Honestly, the 1.25-inch receiver on the lower trims is super disappointing cuz it limits your weight capacity for heavy mountain bikes.

* 1.25" hitches tend to wobble way more than 2" ones
* Most premium trays are built for 2" for a reason
* The backup sensors will DEFINITELY beep at you no matter the brand

I agree with the first reply about the swing extension, but just be careful because that extra leverage adds a lot of stress to the hitch. I ended up having a pretty frustrating experience with a lighter rack that felt way too flimsy on the highway. Good luck!!

sooo i've been using the Kuat Racks NV 2.0 2-inch Hitch Bike Rack on my ID.4 and honestly it's basically perfect. i was worried about the weight too since EVs are heavy, but this thing is solid. i'd suggest getting the Kuat Racks Pivot v2 Swing Away Extension if u really need trunk access without taking the bikes off, tho it adds more weight to the hitch. just make sure to double check ur receiver size cuz the 1.25-inch one might wobble more than the 2-inch! gl!

Similar situation here - I went through this last year. Honestly, I just grabbed a basic platform rack from Yakima because those high-end ones are seriously pricey and it works amazing on my ID.4!

stumbled upon this... i've been hauling heavy bikes on my EVs for years and safety is *huge* when ur dealing with that weight. i think the backup sensors are pretty picky depending on the software version, but i'm not 100% sure. before i give advice, can you clarify if ur ID.4 is the AWD or RWD?? it basically determines the hitch size and what's actually safe to bolt on.

^ This. Also, been living with my ID.4 for over a year now and those sensors are definitely the biggest headache. Just caught this thread after getting back from a ride. You really gotta be careful with the total tongue weight if you end up with the smaller 1.25-inch hitch, cuz two heavy MTBs plus a rack can get sketchy way faster than you think. A couple of quick tips from my experience:

  • If you want to keep the profile slim, maybe consider the 1UP USA Quik Rack Single with an extra tray. It is basically tank-grade aluminum and doesnt rattle at all.
  • Another solid choice is the Thule T2 Pro XTR which is super beefy and has built-in wheels for when you take it off. Honestly, no matter what you pick, the backup camera is gonna be mostly useless with bikes back there. I just learned to live with the beeping or I just hit the mute button on the screen as soon as I pop it in reverse. Better to be safe than sorry with that weight hanging off the back tho!

> What are you all using that fits the factory setup perfectly? Wait, quick question before I dive in... are you driving the AWD or the RWD trim? Honestly, it makes a massive difference for the tongue weight and which rack wont just bounce all over the place. I learned the hard way that those 1.25 inch receivers are kinda trash for heavy MTBs. I tried some of the higher-end brands and unfortunately, it wasnt as good as expected for the price. The sensors on my ID.4 are basically useless the second a rack is on there anyway, so dont expect miracles on that front. It's super annoying and basically renders the backup assist dead whenever I'm hauling bikes. If you want something that actually performs without spending a fortune:

  • Saris SuperClamp EX 2-Bike
  • RockyMounts MonoRail 2-Bike Platform Rack The MonoRail is pretty solid because it has decent clearance for the hatch, though I still had issues with it blocking the camera slightly. Tbh its way better than spending crazy money on the big names if youre just looking for something functional that wont wobble too much.

Great info, saved!

Curious about one thing: do you know for sure if your ID.4 has the 1.25 or the 2-inch hitch?? I had some issues with my setup cuz I underestimated the weight of two MTBs on a smaller receiver... it was actually pretty disappointing how much it wobbled! Knowing your size is CRITICAL for safety since the tongue weight limit is kinda low on some trims. Lmk!
