I just picked up my new ID.4 and I’m absolutely loving it, but I’m looking for some peace of mind with a dash cam. I’m not exactly a DIY expert, and the thought of pulling off trim pieces or messing with the complex electrical system in an EV makes me a bit nervous. I’ve seen some integrated options like the FitCamX that supposedly swap out the rearview mirror housing, but I’m curious if they’re actually as simple as they look. I’d really prefer a clean, 'stealth' look without wires hanging down to the 12V socket. For those of you who have one, which specific brand offered the most painless, plug-and-play installation for this car?
Seconding the recommendation above. I've messed with dash cams for years and the biggest thing I've learned is that *reliability* is everything in an EV. My current setup is one of those housing-swap types and it was honestly a breeze to install. No wires hanging down at all! Just be careful with the plastic clips when you're popping the cover off... they can be pretty finicky and you dont wanna snap 'em. Safety-wise, it's way better than tapping into the fuse box yourself. 👍
Sooo, I totally feel u on the anxiety about messing with EV wiring. It's highkey intimidating at first! Honestly, for the ID.4, the best way to understand these cameras is that they basically just intercept the power from your rain sensor or rearview mirror. It sounds scary but it's literally just a Y-splitter cable.
Here's what I recommend based on my own setup:
* FitCamX Dash Cam for Volkswagen ID.4 4K Front and Rear - This is the gold standard for that OEM look. I have the 4K version and seriously, you cant even tell it's there. It replaces the plastic trim piece behind the mirror.
* SanDisk 128GB High Endurance microSDXC Card - Make sure to grab a high endurance card because regular ones will fry in the heat/constant rewriting.
I was nervous too, but the FitCamX really is plug-and-play. You just pop the old plastic shroud off with a pry tool (be careful!), unplug the mirror power, plug their harness in, and snap the new housing on. It took me maybe fifteen minutes? No wires hanging down to the 12V is a total game changer. gl! 👍
Exactly what I was thinking
