I just picked up a new Volvo C40 Recharge and I’m loving it, but the standard mobile cable is just too slow. I’m looking for a reliable Level 2 home charger that plays nice with the Volvo app. Should I go hardwired for max speed or stick with a NEMA 14-50? What are you all using?

Hi there, and congrats on the C40! Saw your post earlier and wanted to jump in with a technical perspective. To understand the speed, you have to look at the C40's onboard charger, which is limited to 11kW. This means even if you buy a massive 80A station, the car won't pull more than 48A.

Honestly, if you're looking for the best bang for your buck, I suggest the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp. It’s a tank—all metal, no unnecessary bells and whistles, and usually runs around $350. Since the Volvo app already handles your charging schedules and state-of-charge limits perfectly, you don't actually need to pay a premium for a "smart" charger. A simple, reliable 40A unit on a NEMA 14-50 plug will give you about 28-30 miles of range per hour, which is plenty for an overnight fill. Hardwiring is great for a cleaner look, but for a budget-friendly setup, the Grizzl-E is hard to beat. Hope this helps!

Hey! Congrats on the new C40 Recharge—it's a fantastic ride, but I totally get the frustration with that mobile cable.

1. **BE CAREFUL** with NEMA 14-50 outlets if you aren't hardwiring. A huge mistake people make is using a cheap $10 hardware store receptacle. Those aren't rated for the continuous high-amperage heat of an EV and can actually melt or start a fire. If you don't hardwire, make sure your electrician installs a high-quality Hubbell HBL9450A 50 Amp 125/250V Receptacle.
2. For your situation, I've had the best luck with the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger. I've been using it for a year and it's rock solid.
3. I definitely recommend going the hardwired route. The C40 can pull 48A, and you can only get that speed if you're hardwired on a 60A circuit.
4. Another great option is the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48 Amp Level 2 EV Charger. It's super compact and the app is actually better than Volvo's—well, actually, it's way more reliable for scheduling off-peak charging.

Anyway, stick with a reputable brand. It makes a world of difference. Good luck!

Honestly, I’ve been digging into the market research on these chargers lately because the options are kinda overwhelming. Tbh, it really comes down to whether you want the charger to be 'smart' or if you’re cool letting the Volvo app do the heavy lifting. Before you pull the trigger, I gotta ask a couple things to see what fits your setup: - What’s your actual budget for the unit plus the electrician? Some of those tech-heavy brands get real pricey once you factor in the labor for a hardwired install.
- Are you planning to add a second EV down the road? Some brands are way better at 'load sharing' (splitting power between two cars on one circuit) than others, which is huge for future-proofing. Basically, most of the 'premium' brands charge a markup for their proprietary app interface. If the Volvo app already handles your scheduling and SOC limits, you might just be paying for features you'll never actually use - at least that’s what I’ve gathered from looking at the different market tiers.
