Recently hit 45,000 miles on my A3 and due for an oil change. Dealer recommends their synthetic at $90, but I've seen mixed opinions online about alternatives. Currently in Arizona with summer temperatures approaching.
Any recommendations on specific brands/weights that work well? Looking for something that balances performance and engine protection without breaking the bank. Worth paying premium for the dealer oil?

I have been pretty cautious with my A3 since I hit 40k miles too, basically just wanting to make sure the engine stays healthy for the long haul. Tbh the dealer oil is fine but you can get the same or better protection for way less money. Since you are in Arizona, staying with a 5W-40 weight that meets the VW 502 00 spec is probably your safest bet to handle that summer heat. Here are the two I have used and been satisfied with:
- Castrol Edge 5W-40 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil: This is a solid choice because it is often the factory fill. It keeps things running smooth and I have had no complaints over several intervals.
- Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40: This is what I use now. It is a bit more of a premium German brand but it works well and gives me peace of mind regarding engine wear. Honestly, you do not need to pay the dealer premium. I am very happy with the Liqui Moly lately, but the Castrol is a perfectly safe and reliable way to save some cash without any issues.
