Hello Audi enthusiasts! I recently purchased a used Audi A4 and I'm looking to perform my first oil change. I've heard that the process can be a bit tricky compared to other cars, especially with the placement of the oil filter and drain plug. Does anyone have a step-by-step guide or tips on how to do this efficiently? Also, I'm curious if using a specific type of oil or filter brand makes a noticeable difference in performance.

Additionally, while we're on the topic of maintenance, I've been considering upgrading my rims and adding a roof rack for better utility. If anyone has recommendations for compatible rims or roof racks that won't interfere with the car's aerodynamics or performance, I'd love to hear your suggestions. Looking forward to your advice and experiences!

Just caught this thread while browsing... honestly, before we get too deep into the weeds, what year or generation is your A4 exactly? The B7 is a totally different beast than the B8 or B9, so the tricky parts change depending on what you're actually driving. If you've got one of the newer models where the filter is sitting right on top, I would suggest skipping the drain plug altogether. Get yourself a Schwaben 6.5 Liter Fluid Extractor and you can just suck the oil out through the dipstick tube while standing up. It's a lifesaver. Just be careful with that plastic oil filter housing tho, they can get real brittle from the engine heat and you don't want to crack it by over-torquing. I usually stick with Liqui Moly Molygen New Generation 5W-40 and a Mann-Filter HU 6002 z Oil Filter for my builds. Regarding the rack, the Thule WingBar Edge is super low profile and wont mess with your gas mileage as much as the cheaper square bars. Let us know the engine code and year so we don't steer you wrong on the parts.

Welcome to the Audi family! Changing the oil on an A4 can seem daunting, but it's manageable with the right resources. There are some great video tutorials out there, including one specifically for 2004-2009 A4 2.0L models. This video even links to a recommended oil filter. Another helpful video demonstrates the process on a 2007 B7 model and recommends a specific oil drain tool, which might make things easier. As for oil and filter brands, using a high-quality oil like LiquiMoly can potentially reduce oil consumption, especially in older models. While it might not solve underlying issues, it's a good starting point. Ultimately, choosing a reputable brand that meets Audi's specifications is key. Regarding your rim and roof rack upgrades, check out dedicated Audi forums and communities. You'll find discussions about compatible brands and models that maintain optimal aerodynamics and performance. Be sure to specify your A4's model year and trim level for the most relevant recommendations. Good luck with your first oil change and enjoy your A4!
